Bumpity.
Are there any specific brands that are lower dosage?
I'm looking at it as a way to get my cycle regulated. My periods are close together and not regular and that would be fine, but I get crazy bad PMS, and don't realize that's why I'm tearing off people's heads until the period's actually here.

LoEstrin is one that I can think of- I didn't have good luck with it (but I didn't have good luck with any oral contraceptive I took) but it could be worth trying out. I think there are more too.

I've only been on "ultra-low" formulas. Currently I'm on Mircette, which was my very first pill and I've gone back to it. It only has two placebo days, and the last 5 days have even less estrogen than the first 21. Also been on Alesse and Loestrin.

I'm on Loestrin Fe currently and LOVE IT. Super light periods, less cramping, and my skin is clearer than it has ever been. There is also a newer formulation with an even lower dose called Lo Loestrin Fe, but I haven't heard much feedback about it yet.

The Nuvaring is low dose and I've found it to be the best thing that ever happened to me, birth control wise. I don't have to remember much other than insert, remove three weeks later, wait a week, insert new ring. I have used it continuously while in the field, or to reschedule if I know I'm going to be traveling, an event, or something high stress. I've been a dedicated user for almost four years.
One side effect has been a delayed period, like a week and sometimes I barely have a period since I put in the new ring before I have it. Putting it in is no problem, sometimes removal takes a little finesse. TMI but no matter which tampons I've used I always am aware of their presence, not so with the Nuvaring.

The thought of insertion (not to mention removal) squicks me out in the extreme.
On another note, the guy I thought was completely blowing me off made contact tonight...so if you ever have that problem, try bumping this thread.

Huh. Never noticed this thread.
Word to the wise - if you think you'll be ok going 6 weeks with no pill, because you're getting an IUD at the end of those 6 weeks, think again. Even if you use a condom (failed), and then you drop a $50 on the Plan B pill at CVS the next morning and take the pill within 12 hours of the sex.... you can still get pregnant (with your 3rd kid).
No need for IUD after this baby though. Hub is getting his shit soldered.

I saw this thread and had to click it because these are two of my favorite words.
After years of extremely painful cramps every time I got my period, my doctor put me on Sprintec. I mean, I looked at my mom a few times and asked if she ever wanted grandchildren because I was thinking of fixing myself right then and there (we have a lot of animals, so I will always think of it as "fixing"). Constantly got checked out of school because I was just doubled over in pain, unable to focus at all, and almost screaming. Tried prescription pain relievers and everything. Now, 4 months later, I am praising the words as I am almost entirely cramp free. Sometimes I still ask if she ever wants grandchildren, because I kind of never want to go off of the pill.

I found the insertion was difficult, my Dr. inserted the first one and she had difficulty. I continued to have problems and decided it was not for me. Also, I know of 2 other woman that tried the ring and said their boyfriends did not enjoy the experience so to speak

This happened to a friend of mine. Her kids are less than 12 months apart. She got the IUD ASAP after the second one (and told her hubby no risky business until then )

Please be gentle with me about this: Has anyone else had severe pain etc with the sponge? Needless to say, I didn't go there a second time.

I used it once... have to think about how far back it was, but close to 20 years ago.
I had painful, painful cramps the whole rest of the night, but didn't dare take it out because I was terrified of getting pregnant.
Once I removed it, I felt vaguely gross/flu-like for about 24 hours.
And, of course, I didn't get pregnant, but shortly after that (within 5 years), they took it off the market.
That said, I wouldn't rule out user error. I put a hole through two of them before I got one put in correctly. I was young, I was very green.

Was not aware the sponge is still on the market. I used it after my daughter was born but found out I am HIGHLY allergic to the medication they used. This was 25 years ago. Haven't used it since.

Not surprised either of you had pain or a bad reaction as spermicide is a chemical and unless it has been reformulated is highly irritating and (not that this applies to either of you) can cause the HIV virus to be more easily contracted through vaginal or anal tissue that has been irritated, as well as HPV, and doesn't do anything for other STIs, and with pregnancy has a failure rate of up to 20%. Nonoxynol-9 is the most common spermicide, and chemically the way it works is kind of like detergent or a foaming product, changing the surface tension of water or liquid, and to many is an irritant.
Nonoxynol-9 or another spermicide is going to likely be found on condoms with spermicide (most just have lube now), the sponge, foam, and gel or cream used with a diaphragm. The failure rates for the sponge are pretty high, and with the problem you had I hope you can get in and talk to your doctor to find something that works for you. The only other thing I can think of is someone having an allergy to polyurethane, which is what the sponge is made out, and not as common as a latex allergy, still a possibility.

For those who asked, it was taken off of the market years ago, but recently returned. My bc of choice wasn't available, so I thought I'd try it. I had reactions I could not believe, and seriously weighed whether not getting pregnant was worth it. Vomiting and bleeding were the least of the symptoms, but it really did feel like I had the flu. I still feel lousy!
