Huh. Never noticed this thread.

Word to the wise - if you think you'll be ok going 6 weeks with no pill, because you're getting an IUD at the end of those 6 weeks, think again. Even if you use a condom (failed), and then you drop a $50 on the Plan B pill at CVS the next morning and take the pill within 12 hours of the sex.... you can still get pregnant (with your 3rd kid).

No need for IUD after this baby though. Hub is getting his shit soldered.

This happened to a friend of mine. Her kids are less than 12 months apart. She got the IUD ASAP after the second one (and told her hubby no risky business until then)

Please be gentle with me about this: Has anyone else had severe pain etc with the sponge? Needless to say, I didn't go there a second time.

I used it once... have to think about how far back it was, but close to 20 years ago.

I had painful, painful cramps the whole rest of the night, but didn't dare take it out because I was terrified of getting pregnant.

Once I removed it, I felt vaguely gross/flu-like for about 24 hours.

And, of course, I didn't get pregnant, but shortly after that (within 5 years), they took it off the market.

That said, I wouldn't rule out user error. I put a hole through two of them before I got one put in correctly. I was young, I was very green.

Was not aware the sponge is still on the market. I used it after my daughter was born but found out I am HIGHLY allergic to the medication they used. This was 25 years ago. Haven't used it since.

Not surprised either of you had pain or a bad reaction as spermicide is a chemical and unless it has been reformulated is highly irritating and (not that this applies to either of you) can cause the HIV virus to be more easily contracted through vaginal or anal tissue that has been irritated, as well as HPV, and doesn't do anything for other STIs, and with pregnancy has a failure rate of up to 20%. Nonoxynol-9 is the most common spermicide, and chemically the way it works is kind of like detergent or a foaming product, changing the surface tension of water or liquid, and to many is an irritant.

Nonoxynol-9 or another spermicide is going to likely be found on condoms with spermicide (most just have lube now), the sponge, foam, and gel or cream used with a diaphragm. The failure rates for the sponge are pretty high, and with the problem you had I hope you can get in and talk to your doctor to find something that works for you. The only other thing I can think of is someone having an allergy to polyurethane, which is what the sponge is made out, and not as common as a latex allergy, still a possibility.

For those who asked, it was taken off of the market years ago, but recently returned. My bc of choice wasn't available, so I thought I'd try it. I had reactions I could not believe, and seriously weighed whether not getting pregnant was worth it. Vomiting and bleeding were the least of the symptoms, but it really did feel like I had the flu. I still feel lousy!
