I have a quick question. If a girl is offered a bid by Alpha Phi and she denies it, she can't accept another "snap" bid from a different sorority, right? She has to wait a year, right before she can take another bid?

No. If she turns it down, she can accept elsewhere if one is offered. It's only if she accepts one that it is binding for a year. And it wouldn't be a "snap bid" from another group. It would be done thru COB/COR. Snap bids are offered between bid matching and actual bid day activities. Once all the bids are handed out from formal recruitment/snap bidding, the COR/COB process starts and continues until a group has reached quota and/or total. (or there is a moratorium for colonization for a new chapter)

I thought that even if a girl started pledging a colony and quit, she wasn't bound by the one year rule because the colony wasn't a chapter yet. If I'm all wet let me know - the example I'm going on is from many o' moons ago.

When I went through recruitment, all of the chapters on my campus were colonies recruiting more girls through formal recruitment (frills and all). When it came time for preference card signing, they sat us all down in an auditorium and had someone from NPC tell us about how seriously we should take the preference card process - that this bubble sheet in our hands would indicate from which houses we would accept a bid, and that if we got a bid from one of the chapters we bubbled in, we COULD NOT accept a bid to another organization for one calendar year. So, unless what NPC told us then has been changed, NMs of colonies are held to the 1-year policy as well.
Now, if I may say something about all of the "there's always Alpha Phi" comments. Alpha Phi will have the pick of the litter for girls who, for whatever reason, did not pledge during formal recruitment. I would expect the competition to get in that chapter will be high, and I would anticipate they WILL go for as many girls as possible given the importance of numbers at Bama. Please be cautious when you encourage girls about Alpha Phi, because not all of them will be able to join and it's also unfair to Alpha Phi.
Finally, women that didn't go through formal recruitment should also consider Gamma Phi Beta as an option if they have COR events.

^^^but if all your chapters went NPC at the same time, that's a little bit different than the one colony on campus situation they will have at Alabama.

I'd say the real difference is that the bids extended to new members of Alpha Phi won't be through formal recruitment. I think that's the real issue, not the matter of it being a colony.

I don't think people are suggesting girls check out Alpha Phi because we think they're more likely to get a bid to the colony. We're simply suggesting it because it would be a great opportunity for them to check out. We know that competition for the colony will be high, and that not every girl who's interested is going to get a bid. But I don't think there's anything wrong with telling girls they should find out more about it.

I don't think any of us believe Alpha Phi would seriously consider taking two new members. That's ridiculous.
|
Of course it's ridiculous. Her point was that just because they're colonizing, they don't feel the need to take just anyone for the sake of numbers. (I had no idea that people would actually think she meant it as a factual statement).

I have been lurking on this site for about a year and now that my daughter has pledged I felt like I should make a post. Being from out of state and reading some of the posts had me a bit nervous about recruitment at BAMA. I do have to say though it worked out great with my daughter having a favorite from ice waters on and was so excited when they asked her to be a sister. If you have not guessed from my screen name she pledged Delta Zeta.
Also I want to thank everyone for all the information you have shared on this site it truly was a big help!

Congratulations! They're a great chapter. I should know - my daughter (now graduated) is a Bama DZ!
