I went to high school with a guy who was a pathological liar. He told some people that either he or his dad had a GTO, but no one had ever seen it. I don't know what he told people when they were over at his house. It became a running joke.
I can't remember what else lied about, but they were pretty out there. There was some lie about a famous person or sports team...hmm...

I once promised a friend I'd pick her up at the airport. Her plane got in at 5:30, but she didn't clarify for me that she meant AM, not PM. So I got my acting together and started crying and told her my car got stolen (from an attended parking garage) and I couldn't come get her. Later on that week, she sees me cruisin around campus in my car, and I told yet another lie that the cops found it and dropped it off to me (dose that even happen?). One of my other friends questioned why I didn't have to go to a lot to pick it up, so I then said "yeah, my insurance covers the drop off fee too." LOL, so to answer the question of why people lie and stuff, once you start, you gotta keep going. And really, I just didn't feel lke drivin to the airport at 5AM! It's like, an hour away from campus.
P.S. No need to worry, my car is perfectly fine!

Lying is lame and pathological liars can need counseling (not saying you're a pathological liar ).
It is a downward spiral and you should've just told your friend that she didn't clarify AM or PM. That's the simple way.
Edited Because: I think I was being too hard on you. You may've lied because you thought you were going to lose your friend if you told the truth. Everyone has told some untruth or withheld info to some extent. I guess it depends on the extent, what you're lying about, how frequent, etc.

Lying is the bomb...under certain circumstances. I enjoy teling colorful lies to strangers online and in person. Some of the reactions are priceless. Try it sometimes.
And I am telling the truth here!
Of course, I don't do this to people I know.

Do you really lie to these strangers or are you playing a character? As in "DITY?"
Whatever the case, at least you don't lie to people you know. That would be scary.

I personally believe that there is a girl who does this in EVERYBODY'S high school because everyone I've ever told this says "OMG there was a girl at my HS that did this."
There was this girl who would CONSTANTLY LIE about being pregnant. I mean every other month, she would come to school with pictures of a positive pregnancy test and be like "OMG I'm gonna have a baby!" Then she would "have a miscarriage" and "get pregnant" the very next month. She would come to school with baby catalogs and be picking stuff out like "OMG if I have a girl I want this nursery!"
She would say stuff like "OMG it's kicking!" Dude, your stomach is FLAT. If you WERE pregnant, it would so not be kicking after a MONTH.
There was one time she brought in this ultrasound picture and was like "Hey everybody come see my baby!!" She was creating a distraction so the teacher told her to hand it over, she looked at it and was like "This iis from 1984 and has your mom's name on it."

Back in the day, I dated a guy who I later found out to be a super liar. Out of all the stuff he told me, the only thing that was true was that he was a Mason.

I worked with a woman who claimed she had a masters degree in some very technical field and because she had so much experience, all she had to do to get her degree was write a paper and submit it on the Internet. Yeah. I'm sure it was a very valid degree. And I'm SURE if she really had such a degree she'd be working as a clerk in the advertising department instead of in that field. My coworkers and I used to joke that we were really a brain surgeon, a rocket scientist and a nuclear physicist and just worked in the department for fun - just like her.

My sister-in-law, in addition to being a complete idiot, is a pathological liar. She will hear something that someone is joking about, or speculating about, etc., and in her brain that translates to the gospel truth. So the very next day she'll start going on and on about whatever off-the-wall topic it was as if she is the authority on the matter. It makes me sick, but it's also a little sad. At least if the girl were intelligent, she might actually be able to make her lies a little believable. But she has actually said things to me like, "Did you know that it's a proven fact that all babies know all the secrets of the universe until they speak their first word and lose their innocence?" Dumbass.

We met a group of guys on spring break and one of them was a classic liar. According to him, he made $80,000 a year and had a full ride to college. The guys had the hotel room that adjoined ours, so we ended up spending most of the week hanging out with them. And we used the liar as much as we could- we would let him pay for all sorts of things since he had so much money .
About 6 months later I ran into one of the other guys from next door at Halloween at OU and he told me that all of the guys had pretty much stopped talking to the liar.
