If you are more concerned about getting the "respect" of other greeks than you are of being respected by the chapter you are trying to join (and more importantly, of respecting them and the way they run their chapter), I strongly question your motives for wanting to join. Our organizations are lifetime membership service organizations, not tools of social validation for people under 25. The fact that you are ready and willing to put yourself, the chapter, and the organization at risk before even being accepted says that you don't really know or believe that.

Please understand that being Greek has more to do with than a peer reputation regarding the viability of how they were "made." It's about the maturity to understand the ideals of the organization you aspire to become a part of and making that a part of your life, your way of being in the world, in your service to the community and humanity, and how you treat everyone, even, ironically, your fraternity brothers. Just last year, I talked with prospective members of my undergrad chapter, which is known for being "rowdy," about the same thing:I grilled them, pressing them to find out if they be active in the Fraternity in 5,10,or 25 years when they willl no longer undergraduate life and have to sacrifice to go to chapter and committee mettings, mentor kids, with pressures of work, family, church, etc.will they be doing what the things the chapter you're looking down the nose at are doing. We have this saying in Omega: It's much harder to be a brother than it is to pledge. That's the acid test! (I say this as someone on the way to 30 years as a member of Omega Psi Phi and still active.)

THE TRUTH!! This whole "paper vs. made" thing is all about self-esteem and the need to be validated by people when it doesn't matter and has no bearing on what kind of member you will be. If you're confident about yourself, then it shouldn't matter what others (even your own sorors or frat) think about you. Just be ACTIVE!

I hear that BLUENYC2... this is some bull! What it boils down too is this: Are you joining XYZ organization because you believe in perpetuating the ideals for which it was founded???
If you're (OneLovve) joining to wear 'Nalia, throw up signs, and stroll at parties, and/or for social status then save your self (or your parents) a couple "bills" and don't waste your own or the organizations time. Greek life my not be for you. This is a LIFETIME membership, period.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Let's find out if greek life is for OneLovve...pick the hottest day in the summer and go help with the beautification of a particular part of town, or instead of rolling over on Martin's Day, go march and sing, or go raise monies for scholarships in your area, or work at the homeless shelter, or get off work and go tutor kids, or go paint somebody's house that you don't know, or build houses for habitat for humanity, or...get my drift? That is a drop in the bucket in regards to what greeks are doing, old and young! I am sure everyone else with their .08 cents could go on and on about the hard work they exude their in chapters...but the reality is this, I remember when I had my epiphany and realized that it wasn't about me, but how I could change the condition of life around me.

PAPER MADE
To those who are concerned about being "paper"
First let me say that I crossed the burning sands 04/17/1993 at 12:38 a.m. when "pledging" was considered banned ( In 1990 there was a concerted effort by the Divine 9 to implement a new intake process). Anyway this was the process at the university that I attended as a matter of fact each active sorority/fraternity(within the Divine 9) had to see you before you crossed. I know this sounds strange but thats just the way it was and I must say that I don't regret it. I love my sands and my sorority sisters. My point is the important aspect is the respect that you have for yourself and the organization that you want to be a part of. Please know that this is a personal decision that you will have to make. Sororities look for those with good character, leadership skills, scholarship, and who will display finerwomanhood so don't worry about being "paper" just don't be "plastic" - a shell of a soror who wears the colors, does the call, and yet knows nothing at all.
And to all of my sorors - ZEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEPHIIIIIIIIII AND TO MY FRAT BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPHIIIIIII
YOU KNOW JUST LOVE

But there is one problem. The active chapter at my school are known as "paper made". I've been informed that paper made means they have not been "MADE"(I'm hoping we all know what this means), they have only went through the RUSH and/or paper process.
Okay, I dont know what that means, I'm not sure if we call it somthing else or i'm having a blonde moment or i'm just not up to par but can you explain that to me in lamens terms pleaze, Sorry to be slow!

As an NPC member, I've never used/heard it used within the NPC. "Pledging" and "paper" are often associated with NPHC organizations (although I know some other council orgs use it as well) and are used to describe two very different membership intake processes.
Some members are very sensitive about the subject, so my suggestion is to do a search and read up on the terms to get more information.

In a nutshell:
"Paper made" = strictly adhering to the membership intake programs of the NPHC orgs, which, in the late '80s, did away with pledging and hazing.
"Made right" = being a part of a sub rosa ("underground") pledge program which incorporate activities that constitute hazing.

One Love,
I have a great idea! Since you're concerned about joining the chapter at your college because they are "paper" why not write a letter to the National President of your desired organization and let them know of your discontent. Be sure to include your real name and permanent address!
