U. of Georgia: Porn on Their Minds?

In other threads GCers have discussed the high test scores and GPAs needed to get into the University of Georgia. Evidently, however, the academic requirements don't keep some fraternity pledges from acting incredibly stupid, as the student paper, the Red and Black reports:

http://www.redandblack.com/vnews/dis.../4500d509da111

It's too soon to tell what the university's student judicial process will decide about this.

Update: UGA Suspends Chi Phi Chapter
The Associated Press reports that the U. of Georgia has suspended the Chi Phi chapter "indefinitely," until an investigation is completed. See

Oh really? For a new member of a GLO you certainly seem to be quite an expert (your indicated change in username in your signature indicates, if I am not mistaken, that you have just pledged AXiD.)

When I was a pledge, groups of us often got together and did random crazy stuff without being told to do it. Groups of friends who are not Greek get together and do stupid stuff all the time. Granted, I never participated in anything like this incident- but we were not always doing things that we would want Mom to know about.

And on occasion, pledges- especially new ones- will let a borderline brother or two tell them to do something dumb without the chapter's officers and pledge trainers knowing about it. Often these activities fall well outside the scope of what a chapter's membership and officers find personally acceptable.

Chi Phi was pretty big when I was at UGA (and had a solid reputation in all senses), so I am not ready to believe the actions of what must be a fraction of the brand new pledge class are indicative of attitudes endorsed by the entire chapter.

These 7 guys did something incredibly inappropriate in a public place and so they have invited and earned all the scrutiny that is to come. The idea itself is kind of funny, but white men using photos of African-American women is where a dumb idea became an unacceptable incident worthy of severe action by the University.

But let's see where it all started before we go blaming an entire chapter and hanging the actions of a very few on the heads of many.

Why is it newsworthy that the nude women were black?

I wondered the same thing when I read it.

A post by Sistermadly in the Greek Life forum says that the fraternity is being investigated under the university's anti-discrimination policy, so that would probably explain it.

Otherwise, your point is correct.

Oh give me a friggin' break.

One does not have to be in a GLO do know what is and isn't hazing.

The fact that she's a new member does not and should not indicate how much she really knows about the subject.

How do you know that these pledges were asked or told to do this at all? I don't think it says anywhere that members were involved......rather that there was an investigation. You can't just scream "Hazing" on this story......thats ridiculous.

Exactly.

JessXica, I am sorry I snapped at you earlier. No need for me to have done that, but macallan25 is echoing my suspicions here.

Macallan25 I think suspects the same thing I do- that this might well be the unilateral action of a few freshmen.

I was a pledge and then active in my GLO at 2 large schools with big, but different, Greek systems. While in grad school at the place where I had reaffiliated during undergrad, I still helped out at my chapter sometimes. And today I am an advisor of that chapter.

My point is that I have been around all this for a long time and it is my experience that often times freshmen, or guys in general, get it in their heads to do something dumb. And if they happen to be aligned with a fraternity, the hazing accusations are almost automatic.

You are right that a reasonable person would look at this and say something to the effect of, "Who would do this on their own? They must have been forced to do it."

That is a reasonable assumption to make. My frustration is that I know otherwise having seen this kind of thing happen before (though usually just some weird random stuff that was not offensive like this.)
