i was 16. based on current events and my own personal experience w/a bad teen driver, however, i would like teens to get their licenses at a minimum of 18.
a 16 yr. old put me in the hospital (and put the down payment on my home) so i'd prefer the age limit be upped.

just my .08 on the subject...

I was 16 when I got my permit, driver's license and got my first car. I got my permit in Dec. '97 and my license and car in Sep. '98. My first car was so raggedy. It was an 1989 Dodge Omni that was red with both front doors being brown. My friends used to clown me ALL the time. But I didn't care because I had a car to drive and they didn't.

Learner's permit: 16-1/4
Passed road test (on first try) and got restricted driver's license: 16-1/2
Full driver's license: 17

Here in the 'burbs, you have to drive to get anywhere... so everyone gets a license ASAP.

What's with having to be 21 to get a license with no restrictions? In NY, you can get an unrestricted license at age 18, or 17 if you take driver's ed; the only difference is that there are much harsher penalties for DUI/DWAI if you're under 21. Is that what you're referring to?

Me too! I'm 25.

In 1994 in Ontario, they changed the licensing requirements. It used to be that you could get your full license at 16, with a learner's permit at 15. Now, it's graduated licensing. At 16, you get a G1, which is like a learner's permit. Then after a minimum of 8 months (if you take driving lessons or 1 year if you do not) you can take a road test to get you G2. A G2 is still not a full license. There are still a few restrictions. After a year, you take another road test to finally get your full license called a G class license. If you do everything starting a 16, you will not be able to get a full class license till you are 18.

I have my G1. I have never really needed to get a license. Like NYC, it's not really needed here. You can get everywhere on public transportation. It's expensive to park downtown, and insurance rates are more expensive in the GTA than say, Northern Ontario. But I think I'm going to have to get my license soon. I'm sure my boyfriend is tired of driving my sorry ass around.

Transportation in NYC is pretty good. Upstate, NY is another issue. You pretty much need a car up there and people usually have their license by 16 - 18.
