Hey Everyone,

Thanks so much for the help! It was also fun to read everyone's deb stories or other info. My dad told me I could of made a debut in Cincinnati but by the time that rolled aorund, I was away in college and they were planning to move down south anyhow. I've been looking at some of the silver pendents Tiffany's has and they may fit what I am looking for.

Thanks!

That's sad So many people don't even know what debutantes are anymore, or don't know how to get their daughter into one.

I just saw this thread too. I debuted in Atlanta. Its a huge deal in Atlanta, and all based on who you know, you have to have a former debute request an application for you.

Anyways, I got several engraved things, some nice jewelry, my fav. gift which might sound corny, was when someone donated money in my name to my favorite charity.

A few girls that debuted and went to high school with me, also went to Willam and Mary.

If we end up having daughters, we're making sure they know this is an option if they'd like to debut.

Let me know when you come to New York. Maybe I can crash the ball.

Question about the Junior League ball in New York (as well as other Junior League balls): Is this for daughters of League members?

My cousins in New York have all had HUGE Sweet 16 parties. They wear ball gowns and I think they had some of their friends as "escorts" or something. I'm not sure. Can anyone elaborate?

I've never heard of anything in Detroit. I had a Sweet 16 at a hall, but we weren't dressed up.

sounds sort of similar to a quinceanera party ( a sweet 15 party).

Mine wasn't SO huge but it was fun and I enjoyed the party. There definetly were some big bashes at a few hotels and resturants around our town. I guess it all depends on the money a family has and what they choose to spend it on. My town had a very diverse group of lower and upper middle class so there were classy but small parties like mine and big bashes with professionally done invitations and the party at the Radisson like some of my friend's had. I was never at a party with escorts but there was usually a candle ceremony. For every candle the girl chose either family or friends to speak of and then they came up and helped her light the candle. It was sweet.

Just curious...

Since your Mexican American, why did you choose a Sweet Sixteen instead of a Quincenara?

Well, I know that some chapters of Jack and Jill of America Inc. have a Beautillion program (I was an escort) similar to the cotillion thing.

I think the debutantes are members of the Junior League themselves, but I am not 100% certain. I think that you're in the Junior League. Your fellow members could probably answer this question.

FYI

For those of you not too familiar with deb balls/cotillions, I found this site that explains a little bit on the topic.
