Tip Question

At least the Sonic folks that I know get above minimum wage.

If all they're doing is bringing food to my care, they're doing nothing extraordinary. I only tip well if the service is good.

As far as Sonic, bringing you your order does not constitute service in my mind.

Slight hijack from food/take out but what do you all usually tip at hair or nail salons? I usually give about 20% but I've heard that 10% is average.

i give my hair dresser about 30-40%, but thats only because he is amazing and always does an incredible job (plus i love him and think hes actually underpaid for the work he does).. any other services like nails, waxing, etc i give 20%

Yes I tip hair and nails. But I don't do 20%. Usually 10%. If I am paying at least $100 anyway, just for a color... I am not tipping $20--I don't have the $$ to do that. The rule on that one is that you also don't tip the owner of the salon if they're the one doing your hair.

I used to be a bartender and we had to take carryout orders (both phone and in person). I say yes to tipping for the following reasons:

1) I had to take time away from the well making server drinks, take time away from my paying customers at the bar, and take time away from my tables to cater to you.

2) At the end of the evening, you declare your tips and get taxed based on what your total sales were. (atleast that's how it's done here in Maryland). If I had $700 in sales and $200 of that was carry out, the computer doesn't know the difference and I get taxed on the entire amount.

I'm not saying I want a 20 percent tip for my services. I would be perfectly happy with 2 bucks off a $60 meal. It's just a way of saying thank you for the service given. (I would always ask my customers if they wanted a drink while they waited and not charge them for sodas and tea.)

Now I think it's silly to tip McDonald's and other fast food places because that's what the job is. Fast food~there aren't customers sitting down and waiting for you to assist them. Also, these employees make a flat rate so their taxes won't be affected.

OK yes, I always tip if they make a me a drink while I wait and stuff like that. The place I was talking about to begin with was a mexican restaurant at 3pm and they had it in a bag by the kitchen door when I got there. They guy walked back to the door and brought it to the front. There were like 3 tables eating in the restaurant...so there really wasn't (in my opinion) a service aspect. Therefpre I did not leave a tip. Plus they got my order wrong and I didn't feel like waiting for them to re-do it.

That's another thing..if a restaurant gets your order wrong do you feel rude sending it back?

I always feel rude asking them to send it back..but sometimes I do it anyway...and only do it when it's like REALLY bad wrong and it's something I won't eat. I always try to be as nice as I can when I have to send it back and I don't blame the server..because MOST of the time it's not their fault.

sorry, but i don't and won't tip for take out.

if i was given a free drink while waiting, then i would, but i have NEVER been offered anything.

i tip well in restaurants, my hair dresser, and cabbies. i tip well if food is being delivered to my house.

but i won't tip if i go to the store and pick up the food myself. that just seems ridiculous.
