Tip Question

Ok Do you tip for takeout?

I got Mexican takeout today and the guy behind the counter looked pissed that I didn't leave a tip. Do I need to? Am I being cheap. I mean...there wasn't service involved...

AGDee 02-13-2004 09:11 PM

I've wondered the same thing because the Chinese place I go to has a tip jar on the counter. I agree that putting it in a bag isn't service. We don't tip at Burger King or McDonald's. What's the difference?

unless you are getting food from a fast food place, always tip. ppl are still back there getting your food together....and normally it's just one person working the "take out/to go" service as opposed to a billion servers, so it's a busy job in the restaurant. they get more on their pay check than actual servers, but they still should be tipped. i worked to go service, and it sucks to bring out $60 in food and get nothing for it. the difference in to go and sit-down is that you don't get free refills.....that's basically it.

:)

This particular Chinese place has only take-out, so it feels like fast food. I tip the pizza delivery guy, but if I go pick it up, they don't get tips either. It's a definite grey area. I have to hunt down the AGD etiquette specialist and ask her!

Ok but, it wasn't $60...it was $5.73. And Dee is right...we don't tip at McDonalds or Burger King....or at Subway for that matter..they make the stuff in front of you. I am just confused. How much to you tip?

I'll tip at a restaraunt if getting take out. I am taking their time and their time is paid by tips.

so yes you were cheap, a dollar wouldn't have killed you :p

OK so I was cheap...but also...when I tip, I tip well. I think it's an insult to just leave a dollar.

I agree, but hey, you were the one that left . . nothing :)

Ok, I am a bartender at a casual tex-mex restaurant-Tias Tex Mex, if anyone has heard of it-and I handle all the to-go orders so here is my opinion......

You should tip. Since it is usually the bartender who handles the to go orders, they are only paid 2.13 an hour(in texas anyway) and he/she has to package it, get all your extra stuff(chips/salsa/dressings/silverware etc.) and bring it up to you. Its not quite like mc donalds, because they are paid at least 6 bucks an hour or so. and usually a good bartender will get you something to drink if you are still waiting, and still take care of you, doing all the same things as if you were eating there, the only difference is you take the food out. So that is my opinion.

Ok, I see. But still don't try to give me that "They only make $2.13 an hour. " I know how much they make on average in tips and it's A LOT. I dadted a bartender for a little while and he made really good money.

OK one more thing. There's this one place I go to that is ONLY delivery & take out. I tip for delivery but not usually when I go pick it up. The reason I don't is because if I am going to tip anyway I may as well have them deliver it. If I drive there to pick it up I don't see that it's needed...at least at that place. Now if there's a bartender or something, I usually do.

If you order Dominos pizza and go pick it up...do you tip then?

That's another thing. Starbucks tipping pisses me off too...I mean It's already nearly $5 for a cup of coffee.

I think it's ridiculous to tip for takeout.

But in terms of manners, I don't really have a clue what proper ettiquette is.
