Rudey's the single best poster on this frigging site - hey Richard, if you want to learn how to 'fit in' and not get made fun of by the big boys in the schoolyard, do a search and follow along.

Lovelyivy, I must again point out that the caste system is an outgrowth of ONE religion and does not reflect the entire nation. Sorry for not believing sterotypes that I saw on the simpsons. LOL
Furthermore, the caste system in India is a legal system. It's government supported, and is maintained by their government. They are making progress to eliminate it completely, and I applaud them for it. The fact remains, however, that it is a legal system, regardless of where it comes from. People used the Bible as justification of slavery. The Bible is part of a religion. Slavery, in part, arose from that religion. Slavery was still a legal system, not a religious one. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not saying that everyone who supported slavery used the Bible, just as not all people in the top castes in India really care about it because of religion. People will do anything to hold on to power.
If everyone except me loves Ghandi, then everyone except me is completely deluded.

Billy,
You have brought up some legitimate points about the caste system. However, no matter how valid your points may be, attacking an individual such as Gandhi elicits such strong emotional response that the validity of your argument will likely go unheard. Personally, I don’t agree with most of your Gandhi points, but I do agree with your dislike of the caste system. In my opinion, blaming Gandhi for his inability to dispose of the injustice caused by the caste system would be like blaming Lincoln for the injustice the newly freed slaves lived with after the conclusion of the War Between the States. Gandhi was a reformer, and like most reformers, his work was incomplete. Enough of my rant... have a great day.

Optimist Prime...read your first post. That was quite possibly the most ignorant thing I have ever read on GC. That is all.

That story of how Columbus came up with the misnomer is just a nice little story to tell elementary school kids. If you research the Italian, and Latin, language you would see that Indios(sp) is a word meaning God or close to God. It is more likely that Columbus, being Italian, was actually commenting on that fact that these people lived more simply than Europeans, or in the European mindset were close to God. It's a simple linguistical theory to follow.
