Like you said, Sugar and Spice, both ends of the spectrum keep it interesting. Two sides of a coin, as it were, and we would be impoverished without both of them.

I still think one of my favorite quotes about the South came from a Designing Women episode. "Here in the South we're not ashamed of our crazy people, we're proud of 'em! We don't shut 'em up in the attic, we bring 'em downstairs and show 'em off."

LOL! That is my fave Designing women moment! LOL!

I love Kentucky, but I wish I lived further south. It is a good thing my mama was born and raised in Memphis!!! My aunt and I are really close, she lived in Mobile (in the 18 zip code area I believe!). And we always talk about southern life! I told my boyfriend/fiancee I was supposed to be born a hundred years ago and in Alabama or Georgia, but he just smiles. He is a nice southern boy! His mama doesn't have any silver or own a China pattern, but you had better believe she raised that boy with manners and a work ethic! I haven't seen a man that works harder than him!
And women here realize our charm and how to use it, like a weapon. For instance, if I am having a review at work, or if I have something important, I put on the cutest skirts and tops the week before and after (mind you they are not showing any skin that is not appropriate at work!) and the day of I always wear the nices suit that has a skirt with it.... men can't say no to woman around here, and wearing a skirt reminds them that is just what we are.... why my last review I got the highest raise you can be given in your firsy year!
And women in the south don't like to hear NO, it isn't something men around here are supposed to say, unless, of course it is to help their daughters... my daddy told me no, and he hated doing it, but it was for my own protection.
And southern girls treat their daddys right.... the best advice I was given was the only man you can ever TRULY trust not to hurt you or make you cry is your daddy! God love him, he can do no wrong.

Yes, I love the south, it has loads of eccentricity! I mean where else do you find young girls (5 or 6) wanting to do beauty pageants and pick out a silver pattern? And where else do you find the more mature (60 and older) treated so well?

I think I have the bets of both worlds. My mom is from Decatur, AL and my dadis from Monks Corner, SC but they transplanted to DC. I was raised with a lot of southern values and when I go to school in MASS they always laugh when I say mam or sir. I think being raised in DC was awesome. I have had some oppotunities that I think I couldnt have anywhere else.

derpity der der i'm southern. Not really. Virginia is not considered south by anyone except virginians and a few TEXANS. Even in VA people from NOVA (northern virginia) are considered yankees. Which is weird because Lee's army was the ARmy of Northern Virginia. But people from GA, AL and MISS. Say the only southerners are from GA, AL or MISS. If that is your attitude then fine I'm not southern. Have fun in your dresses not being able to fit through normal doorways. The only reason we left the Union was because we thought maryland was going to and didn't want to be surrounded because then we'd be totally screwed. So in the end Maryland didn't and the "southerners" moved captial to Richmond. Thanks a lot guys. And then when Union advanced on Richmond, and Lee and top guys sent to North Carolina for help, NC was like "there aren't enough North Carolinans in that division of Army, ask some one else." Screw you, I don't want to be southerner anyway. I'm a Mid-Atlantician.

Ahh, again, I've never been to a house with an outhouse! (Unless you count the historic places you tour) And I even have family in the mountains (yes, they all wear shoes!).

You call that living? Shoot, those are the things that make going to an out house worth the trip!
LOL. Love it!!

And I love grits! They have started serving iced tea in the north, but they serve it in a tiny little glass and then charge you for refills. And forget about getting it sweet. Nothing is better than my southern grandma's sweet tea. Yum!

PS. My southern mom used to order tea in restaurants when we would be up north. More often than not she received a long island iced tea. And she didn't drink back then!

Not a bad thing, just different.

It's a whole community. People spend ALL DAY there, hell all WEEKEND!

Church for me is an hour on Saturday at 5pm, that's it!

I think it's just another cultural difference...

I was just in the south this past week for a wedding. We drove through Lousiana, Mississipi, Alabama, and the pan handle of Florida. Yes there were beautiful churches, but what got me is that you'd see a row of about 5 churches, all next to each other, then you'd see a row of about 5 dive bars, again all next to each other. So I say the south has their priorities in order, God first, then a good, stiff drink

So can someone tell me why Florida isn't considered part of the south? Is it all the old people?

No, it's all the transplants -- the people who moved there from "elsewhere."

As far as Florida goes, though, there are some parts that are far more Southern than others. I'd say the central and northern areas tend to be very much so southern, wheras South Florida is full of Yankees.

I personally think that Floridians as Southerners is highly debatable and filled with a lot of grey areas.
