I think my mother would have come over and lectured the ritualist and new-member educator about the faux-pas in wearing white after Labor day (and before Memorial day) if they'd asked me to find a white dress in Novembember.

It cracks me up when chapters wear white on pref night too, everyone hates their dresses and complains about how "unflattering" white is. Besides, it's not easy to find a white "cocktail, non-prom" dress any time of the year!

We wear black for initiation into Tau Beta Sigma. Much easier to find!

Not allowing women who are married or pregnant join seems goofy to me.

We do allow members to go alumni as collegiates if they are pregnant or married, but we don't force it on them.

I agree! I don't see why it should make a difference.

If anyone had looked really closely at my initiation dress, they would have realized that it was off white (gasp) but really w/ the lighting and all no one could tell. One girl in my pc actually bought a white dress on clearance at target that was 3 sizes too big, left the tags on, pinned it up, then returned it the next day. While I thought it was kinda tacky to do it, I had to applaud her for her resourcefulness!!!

One of the perks of being in a sorority in Hawaii is being able to find a white mu`umu`u year round:

I too was lucky to have had to wear white to my high school graduation. And then when I got married, I had my mom make me a white dress for my bridal shower. HOWEVER, after just pushing out a nine pound baby girl, I need a little bigger dress until I can lose the "baby" weight.

It's so good to know that more chapters wear weight than I had thought. It is tough to find them, but if you think you'll never wear yours again when you graduate, why not donate it to the chapter for that new initiate that might not be able to find her outfit for pledging or initiation????

oooooh i hated looking for white dresses

I initated last month into Alpha Phi and i am an alum initate and i hated looking for white dresses.

I am married and already have a child so whoever thinks you cannot intiate being married or have a child is silly!

I went out on a all out search to 6 different Ross's to find a white dress and i found only ONE on clearance at the last store i came across and i found white satin dyable shoes as well. My own mother was about to sew a dress for me ... it got down to the wire.

White is a horrible color to go searching for in the fall winter time.

I think when talking about initiating married and pregnant women we're referring to initiating at the collegiate level, not the alumnae level. sorry for the confusion.

We still wear them for initiation at national conventions.

Misery loves company! I love hearing that whites is a common issue across the board. While I think whites look beautiful, there's no question black is the easier alternative.

Thankfully, like may others, I had to wear white for my high school leadership ceremony in my grade 12 and 13 years and then for graduation, so I actually have 2.

Unfortunately, one of my dresses is now indecently short and my long linen one from HS grad was worn for my university grad and almost every other Pi Phi ceremony. I've lost two buttons off the back over the years and each time I wear it as an alum, my collegians laugh at me and ask me when I'm going to get a new dress. I've got to get new buttons!

We have to wear white, but we don't have to wear dresses. I have a pair of capri pants that I alternate with various shirts. We do a lot of things where we have to wear white, so we get a lot of use out of our whites, but we also share with each other so we don't always have to wear the same thing. Also, we don't have to wear shoes, because it is so hard to find completely white shoes. Anyway, that is just what Pi Phi does (or at least, my chapter).

I added the italics for emphasis. The key phrase is "alum initiate". To my knowledge, Alpha Delta Pi does not initiate married undergraduates. It's not silly, it's part of ritual - which, I believe, is highly touted in other threads. Different GLOs have different viewpoints, and that's fine.

Panhellenically,

for my sigma kappa chapter we had to wear white as well. we had to wear a dress or skirt of some sort. no pants. shoes were basically just whatever we could find. in fact we can wear socks if need be. but no barefeet.
i think the no pants thing is b/c we aren't "technically"suppose to wear our badge unless we are wearing a skirt or dress. that's how our founders wanted it. we do wear our badge with pants for regular formal meetings, but that's different.
i was lucky enough to have a white dress that i loved. i already had it when i pledged. i bought it in hs, but not for graduation. ironically enough the school i was suppose to graduate from did require white dresses, but i transferred for senior year and ended up not needing it until i pledged.
