What's even more interesting is that the women's fraternity system at Illinois was fairly late to the game as far as midwestern state institutions go - 1895 (If you look in Baird's it has Kappa Alpha Theta listed as 1875. The charter from the Theta chapter at Illinois Wesleyan was transferred to the chapter at U of I. That happened just as the Pi Phis were waiting on a Grand Council officer to get there from Galesburg.) Truly it was not until the mid 1890s that the women's system began there. It started at Indiana University in 1870, Kansas in 1873, Minnesota in 1880, and Missouri in 1875.

Thanks for posting! I read about the Zeta house being empty and was curious as to its condition.

I hope someone puts it to use. It makes me sad to see a big beautiful old house sitting vacant.

I'd like to point out that that is the OLD Alpha Xi Delta house...

We are currently leasing from Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity on 1004 S. Second Street.

(This is the side that faces the street, can't find one without a bunch of sisters standing in front for the side that faces the park, which I think is the prettier side!)

lovespink88.

How long is lease for Alpha Xi since Phi Sigma Sigma will be recolonizing in Fall 2013? They probably want their house back. I am just curious what will happen.

The houses are beautiful.

Lovely houses! One of the interesting things I've noticed is how many of the chapters have a single letter designation - thirteen, if I've counted correctly.

Also, when the university ran out of housing in the late 60's/early 70's, tons of Greek houses expanded to fulfill the need. You can see it in a lot of the houses that have a weirdly asymmetrical expansion (Alpha Phi, SDT, etc.).

We're in Phi Sigma Kappa not Phi Sigma Sigma.

When I graduated, the Phi Sigma Sigma house was being rented by FIJI. No idea what the situation is there.

There is also this link that has some info

http://archives.library.illinois.edu...s/greekhouses/

I like the color pictures much more than the ones in the link.

Currently Alpha Xi Delta is renting from Phi Sigma Kappa. Phi Sigma Kappa is renting from Beta Theta Pi. I would be interested to know if they will be switching houses in the Fall.

Fiji is renting from Phi Sigma Sigma, and since Phi Sigma Sigma is returning to campus, Fiji will have to move.... maybe to the Zeta house? Does anyone know?

That's the one. Right off of Frat Park. Beta has been gone for a few years now.

Yeah, I remember they ran into some RM trouble. I'm just remembering the house as being a very, very large one, but I have no idea if that's really true or if that's in my head.
