Perez Hilton says he will stop bullying.

http://wonderwall.msn.com/#wallState...-1577682.story

He really is a bully because he has become famous for revealing details of celebrities' personal lives and taunting celebrities. He wouldn't have become famous if he was only a snarky smartass. That's not exciting enough for gossip columnists like Perez Hilton. On that note, are gossip columnists bullies? Hmmmmm...I think so to some extent. I think that any avid gossiper is a version of a bully.

Meh. I'm torn.

When dealing with children -- I think so.

When dealing with adults -- Celebrities are pretty much "public domain," so satire/mockery/parody comes with the territory. If we were to call gossip columnists bullies, we'd have to call SNL, MadTV, etc bullies as well.

Gossip is different than satire/mockery/parody.

True, but a lot of the satire/mockery/parody originates with gossip.

ETA: Ex. I think that if we didn't have the Perez Hiltons of the world blatantly saying "Clay Aiken is in the closet!" we'd still have SNL skits showing Clay with subtle mannerisms/a lisp.

I agree. So, where are the margins? There have to be margins or else we wouldn't have a thread about bullying and cyberbullying. Are there no margins when we're talking about adults and especially celebrities?

Yes and no...celebrities have little expectation of privacy. Though I'll say it does bother me when paps harass them when they have their kids in tow. Not cool.

This deserves a bump.

LOL @ AlphaFrog and me

You ever had a back and forth with a username that you knew was a really silly back and forth; and you don't know what either of you is talking about? LOL.

Way to make me depressed about gaining back 10 of those 112#. You're such a meanie.

By the way, I still have no clue why bullying is such a big deal now. We all went through it and managed to survive without the Jonas Brothers PSAs telling us that bullying is wrong.

My bad, shawty.

The media, including the Internet, makes everything seem like a bigger deal than it is. The reality is that it was also a "big deal" when we were kids. I don't remember if there were PSAs on TV but we had a few school assemblies about people who were picking on others. Some things are kids being kids but it's up to adults to minimize the impact of it all.

The bullying when we were kids would've been different if we had cellphones and the Internet.

Very true and I do believe that its more prevalent now than when I was a kid. Between texting, t-witter and FB bullying can now happen 24/7 instead of just during school hours.

Bullying still had the potential to be 24/7 even before all of the social media sites.

I remember seeing/hearing about people following others home and/or jumping them before/after school. There just seems to be more keyboard courage these days.
