<Slight swerve> For those who are fortunate enough to have two teams to choose from in one city or very close by, how do you choose between them? Do you go with whomever is best at the time, cheaper tickets, broadcasted on tv/radio, family tradition, or something else?
|
For many of the cities with two pro teams in one sport, it's a geographic divide. People in the Bronx are reliably Yankees fans; the Chicago White Sox are the South Side team; etc. A lot of people HATE the "other" team from their city and would not go to that stadium even if the tickets were free.

Never lived in Baahhhstun but I root for the Red Sox. My dad is from there, and when I was a kid, the summer was not complete if we didn't see a game at Fenway when we would visit the grandparents.
As to Northern Virginia, most people living here are not originally from this area. So you see jerseys and ball caps for all sorts of teams, pro and college. And as to the Skins, Snyder is not well liked. People are very nostalgic for the old Skins when Cooke was the owner. And when they had winning seasons. And weren't changing coaches every 27 minutes.

that's what i figured. people will usually root for a team closest to them. i would think that the state of texas are more dallas cowboy fans than houston texan fans.
which new state do you think is ready for a professonal football (or other sports) team?

I would agree that there are probably less Texans fans, if only because they are a relatively new franchise, and Dallas is one of those "bandwagon" teams that people root for when there's no one else.

Well, Nebraska obviously has no professional sports teams and only one big college, so that's why there's border to border devotion to Nebraska football. As for what pro teams, I grew up in NE Nebraska and my dad has always loved the Vikings. My husband grew up in Western Nebraska and they were all Denver Broncos fans. I think that people in SE Nebraska probably follow the KC Chiefs. And most people I know follow the KC Royals (although now with the Rockies, Western Nebraska fans probably follow them) because Omaha has the Royals AAA farm team.

New York. Give them their own team and let us call the Jets and Giants by the name of the state they actually play from.

Sorry, but Giants Stadium which both teams play out of is in NJ. To my mind that makes then New Jersey Teams. Oh and the Statue of Liberty is in NJ as well. :P

I agree with you! Strangest set up ever. Then again, the Washington Redskins play in a stadium in Maryland.

That's different though as that is just a function of the tiny city of Washington not having room for a stadium.

If it's any consolation (to NYers that is), the practice field for the Giants is no longer in NJ. They now do their spring training and all of those other things in upstate NY.

I'm originally from va, so I root for the redskins and a few college teams basically, alot of the surrounding states don't or didn't use to have pro teams like wv and the carolinas ( even though now they have the panthers ) but I know people still from md, va, nc, sc and wv who all root for the skins ! Go skins! : )

I'm from Florida but follow mostly Detroit teams owing to having lived there for 7 years. Exception is the Oakland Raiders for football (you may now commence Al Davis jokes, I've heard them all).
