It all depends on the school - if this is one of those schools where not participating in Greek Week is tantamount to killing puppies, a fraternity that doesn't do so is going to die out very quickly. At other schools (including mine) there were fraternities that kept to themselves and no one cared. It's all about the campus culture.

My point is that if you aren't going to take advantage of the things the Greek system has to offer, why go to the trouble of colonizing a national group and paying the inflated dues? I'm not saying it's wrong to want to keep to yourselves if you want, I just don't see what the point is here when it seems like they are already a "fraternity."

I think some people are jumping the gun a bit on a three-month old colony. I'm not sure how many people are founding members of their chapter (I wasn't), but it seems that can take quite a bit of work. Maybe that work interfered with attending Greek Week.

Also, I'm not sure how many of you joined Greek life for the system, but I'm guessing more joined for the brotherhood/sisterhood within their own chapter. It's great to participate in those events and to the system as a whole, but at the end of the day the loyalty should be back to your chapter and your fraternity/sorority. I'd think those were the reasons for starting a chapter, more so than joining the community.

When I was an undergrad, I really couldn't stand most other greeks and sometimes dreaded having to put up with them at Greek Week events.

I didn't join for greek week or to have functions with other greeks. I joined for my particular sisters and the things that we did as a house.

Greeks can be so critical of each other like this. They're not doing anything illegal. They'll either survive or disappear. If they're not hurting you ("you" in a general sense), what does it matter?
Hey Dani, stop harassing me.

Aye, I know that we start planning for Greek week at least 3 months ahead of time (chorister meetings, fundraising, planning, panhel/ IFC debates, etc). If they're a new colony, theyre probably fresh out of New Member training. I would have lost my mind if I had to do pledging AND plan out Greek week events for the chapter. It's probably just a time conflict with when their colonization began.

But happy colonization

ETA: as a colony, are they not "associates" of the fraternity council, and as such, may be prohibited from participation? (just asking, not sure how that works for the rest of the world?)

Well here doing stuff for the college (not just Greek) community helps out a lot. Especially if they want to get noticed. Being new I would think that they would want to get the word out about their colony. Ok yeah they have 30 members all of which are on the football team(which really really sucks). Its the offseason. Whats the harm in trying to get the name of the "colony" out there so they can possible get more members.

The thing that bugs me the most is that they want to be respected. Well they are not doing anything to earn respect. Ok yeah so some of the sororities made fun of them during Greek Sing. They were completely pissed but hey if they want respect they should show the rest of the Greek Community that they desirve respect. I'm sorry but I am not going to respect a fraternity that is made up of a bunch(ok not all but most) of football players that think they are Gods so that automatically makes them better then the rest of the chapters.

That's fine. But what do you want us to do about it?

By constantly reminding us that the football team on her campus sucks, and that all of Sigma Pi is the fotoball team it seems as if this is her way to indirectly talk shit on a new fraternity on campus.
