Decided to post this link here. It is a not-so-flattering story about (NPC) sorority recruitment at U. Texas. From the way the article is written, the author is not in a sorority.

I also love how she keeps refering to her informant as a "pledge," yet said informant/pledge is participating in recruitment from the active side.

Silly article.
I don't get the point of doing these, I mean, it's not like girls are going to stop rushing at UT because of an article.

It is supposedly a "relationship" column. Yes, I saw it, and was duly horrified. Luckily, she's an idiot, so my hope is that anyone who would read that and then decide not to go through recruitment is someone we wouldn't want .

Well, I must confess...we used the term QR.

I sort of like the article. I didn't find it that shocking. Elements are clearly exaggerated, but I think the sorority member was probably complicit in that.

Yeah, we used the term QR too back in the dark ages, but much of the rest of it is sooooo not how I remember. We actually tried to be kind, not only to each other, but to the girls going through.
It is true though that after seeing it from the other side, I wondered how I ever got in.

That article has all sorts of wrong in it. It isn't even worth discussing. Maybe Alexandra Robbins can use it as source material for a sequel.
Let's face it. Recruitment anywhere requires some judgements to be made, from both the sorority side and the PNM side. If someone isn't comfortable with that idea, they probably shouldn't go through recruitment, especially at a competitive school. Sororities are selective organizations.
I've got to go take off these sorority issued spanx now. They're just killing me!

hey yall im sick today and really bored so i thought i'd give yall an update on what i decided.
obviously nothing is set in stone yet because it's only october and they don't send out contracts this early usually...but if i am ABLE to i think i'm going to stay at SRD or Hardin, the one where my sister lived (not saying which because it's probably irrelevant and i'm trying to be discreet )
and before anyone is like why didn't you just ask your sister in the first place then if she lived there:
well i did ask her first, and that's who gave me the idea that it mattered in the first place, but i just wanted to ask from someone unbiased (she is my sister, and of course very biased )
so thanks for all the help so far and hopefully i will be posting my rush story next august!

LOL! The only thing I found completely unbelievable was the Spanx bit. No one else wears my Spanx!
I've been in groups--NOT MY SORORITY, mind you--where the ZIP code filtering is done when we're inviting potential donors to events. It's not so rare or ridiculous.

I missed the article by a couple of days, but I'm going to throw my two cents in. Be forewarned: I am going to make an "ass of u and me" as the expression goes and assume a lot of things...I am not from UT and from the membership selection this is clearly not Alpha Phi. Buttt...
1. This is undoubtedly one of the most competitive chapters in terms of return rates. Very few chapters at any campus can get away with being that selective initially. This is probably true for a very small handful of chapters on the campus.
2. The $1,400 rush fine is likely the accumulation of all possible fines (meaning you'd pretty much have to not show up to any work week, rush events or membership selection to get it).
3. When they cut "6s and 7s"...I highly doubt that a 6 or a 7 corresponds to what a 6 or a 7 means in the "dating world", as they try to compare it to. My guess is that to get a 1 score you'd have to have a .5 GPA from high school, never stepped foot in a club or activity, got no recs up the boot, etc. My guess is that a 6 or 7 had a very mediocre GPA (compared to whatever standard UT uses for grades), limited activites (maybe was a member of a club but never had leadership, and played only a year of JV instead of three of varsity or what-have-you), no rec, etc.
4. It is obviously exaggerated...I know so many girls that take a secret pride in talking about how bratty and selective they are during rush to boys or friends from back home. "We only take the hottest girls", blah blah...not usually true, but to some people it's fun to say.
5. If this was the case in all sororities, so few PNMs would get bids at UT. But it seems that for the average rushee there is a very strong chance at a happy ending (pending they consider all houses) so, therefore, it is pretty obvious how much this is exaggerated.

What ever ill-effect the Greek system feels from this article can be laid directly at the feet of little miss K.T. in her tight Spanx. What in the world was she thinking? Of course sororities have to make judgements about the PNMs, but why put out for everyone to see exactly how your chapter does it? Poor judgement by K.T. and apparently her chapter when choosing her for membership!

Good for you! And if you happen not to get into one of those dorms (although being a legacy via your sister will certainly help, ain't gonna lie), I still don't think you have any cause to worry!
