now this is funny, but not at all surprising. an assignment i had in an African Music class included the question "how many countries are in Africa?" and this dude asks "Umm, professor, is this a trick question?"
My professor says, "depends, what's your answer?"
and this rather pompous arse goes "well i never thought that it wasnt a country. but hey, what do i know?"
fast forward to our final. the professor puts it on our final as a bonus question but doesnt tell us how many points it was worth. Not only did more than half the class STILL answer "One," but the ones who got it correct got bumped the next grade up on their final grade.
(Not that the class was incredibly hard to begin with, but if your overall grade was a B+, then you got a A-. I guess that helps, if say, you screwed around all semester and pulled off a C- or something.)
the point of the story, i guess is .

Brain just shut down for a second, Monet.
I had a similar one in hs...
him: Affimative action is so stupid! My sister can't get a scholarship to college because all these underachieving, bare minimum black people are taking them! I mean it's so--
**sees me and starts looking uncomfortable**
me: That's dumb. No offense to your sister, but if she's not the best applicant, she won't get the scholarship. Period.
him: *opens mouth, sees my fierce look, then scoots away nervously*

You know, I tried to tell the University of California students how to combat the anti-affirmative action-ites... And all I got was blank stares...
What I said was:
Me: Affirmative action should be supported... What it does is give chances to students who have been historically discriminated against by government doctrine.
Anti's: Well you aren't now!!! If they cannot get in on their own merit, then they don't deserved to be admitted.
Me: But merit alone is not sufficient enough to say the potential of that student and what he or she will become after graduation...
Anti's: Blank stare
Me: You call yourself a Christian? You believe in Jesus Christ? That Christ died on the cross for your sins and He makes intercession for you with God?
Anti's: Yes! I am the most Evangelical Haggard Christian in the whole wide world!!! I know the ENTIRE Bible and can quote every scripture to anyone. I am Christ's number one fan!!! I've got my first class ride to Heaven's Gate. I interpret the Bible LITERALLY!!!
Me: If Jesus can show me Affirmative Action, then how come you can't?
Anti's: THAT'S NOT THE SAME!!!
Me (calmly): Oh so you are the Devil?
Anti's: blank stare and disbelief
Me: Didn't Christ say, that "one can only come to God but through me"...
Anti's: That's not what He meant... (Storms off)

"Black people complain about getting special attention from the police, but then you want special attention when it comes to college admissions. You can't have it both ways."
"I don't think we should automatically look at it as an injustice. I mean, some people are happy working in sweatshops. They just don't have very high goals in life." (about China!)
A little lighter...
"Why doesn't your hair, you know, move? Like Tia and Tamera's?"
^^That girl's mom comes into my house, looks at my mom's kimono hanging and says "Wait, this isn't African-American. "
lol. I didn't know we could only have art from our own culture.

If I had a dime for every non-black person who asked "Can I feel your hair?" Sallie Mae would be non-existent in my life. One hs classmate couldn't grasp the concept of a relaxer, so I snipped out a tiny piece of my hair (back then, I didn't care) to show her how my root was curly and the rest of it was straight. 4 other girls leaned in and all of them went "Ooooooh..." at the same time. If we weren't whispering in the middle of class, I would've cracked up. It was like the aliens in awe of Buzz Lightyear.
Ironically, that class was Af-Am Lit. I had almost signed up for Irish Poetry (I was really interested in it) and when I asked my cousin which one I should take she said "Um, isn't that obvious?" I said "So black people can only take African-American Lit?" and she said "Well, duh."

My parents are of the OLD SKOOL where kneegrows need to get their hurr processed... So of course where I work, folks are rather clueless. Anyhow, the women kinna get it because I have them thinking it's like a "spa day" kinda thing where you get color--my hair is rather long and ultimately thick...
So if I get my hurr all hooked up, I got my co-workers saying--oh, so your parents must be coming into town. At least I get the female co-workers cover me saying I have a "Doctor's appointment"--most of my bosses have been male so they just don't want to ask...
The last place I worked, I had a gay guy covering for me, that helped alot... I don't like Saturday appointments, too many kids jumping all over the place.

That is a sad testament to the social/political/economic dynamics in this country. I often wonder how much Obama's candidacy and hopeful, ascension to the presidency will affect this dynamic.
The line that really gets under my skin is "Do you wash your hair?" from whites who want to inquire about my locs. Depending on the person asking, I will flip them off (Do YOU?) or educate them. Still it bothers me to no end.

The irony is that this boss is an Obama supporter...
His problem is he labels EVERYONE to bring "order" to his world, then blames it on his heritage that is quasi-ethnic. He is physically and mentally ill and is untreated. He has always been way out there--a odd sort of man, but because he is now old, it not just being cantankerous or ornery or funny old guy, it is dayum near OCD, schizophrenic, with psychosis and mania...
What is funny is he's a physician and there are all kinds of physicians around him that trained under him. What's sad is none of them want to treat him because he needs a psych eval before they go in there... It is so sad to see someone of his caliber become like this and he doesn't even care or know it is inappropriate behavior...
This dude does not shower... He really does not wash his hair... On hot days, he is ripe... He eats all kind of ways... He's abusive to his poor wife who many think is very intelligent as a scientist... He mismanages his type 2 diabetes, he's going blind in both eyes. He cannot stay awake, so now he take something likened to crystal meth... I mean dude is one cardiovascular accident away and that would not be shocking to anyone... What would shock us, is if he survived it...
No amount of educating would EVER help someone like him... The best I could do is take care of myself in that situation. So essentially, I flipped him off by leaving and saying I plainly don't care what he does to me professional/ruining my career, etc.
Also, my resolve is different. Why allow this asshole to tell me who I am and what I am all about? He does not know me, nor he is incapable of comprehending what I can do. And that means my Universe is unresponsive to his lowdown, fugly world... I am way beyond whatever he thinks he can muster against me. It all does not matter in the endgame. And I had to learn that to be able to say that about myself...

My friend's bf was talking about the state of third world countries and I forget the context, but he ended the sentence with "....like Africa and other barbarian countries."
I didn't know whether to be pissed the he called Africa barbarian or that he called it a country.

With the whole "curious about black hair" thing:
In junior high, I was often the only African American in my honors classes. When it was time to look at hair strands under the microscope, they all wanted to see mine.
One of those heifers said "I think it moved!", knowing damn well it didn't.
In high school during a summer trip for a mentoring program, some of the chicks saw my hair wrapped one morning & thougt it was "so cool my hair could hold like that by itself"--eediots

I think one of the most ignorant things I've heard so far in college was in my African-American Studies class. We were discussing the many ways that racism shows up in our daily lives when out of the blue, this White classmate blurts out, "um...I think that if I was Black, I'd wanna be a lighter Black.....at least they're more attractive in the prostituting world." All I remember after that comment was the professor giving her the dirty look and asking her to leave the classroom. That classmate never came back either

Stupid, stupid, stupid.
One of the most ignorant things I heard:
I was taking a history class about the United States from the Revolutionary War period until just after the Civil War. My professor spent an ENTIRE class session dissecting slavery – why it was merely an economic system that got a bad reputation. He even ventured to say that he had conversations with many Blacks today who (after "extensive study") respected slavery for the financial powerhouse it was and wished its practice had been extended longer.
This is a predominately white university in the South. Even my white classmates were looking at our professor like . Several students raised their hands to comment or ask questions but were never called on. A few even walked out early, shaking their heads.
