You just need to ask yourself if you want to make the impression that you seem to think you will make: primarily memorable for wild hair and makeup.

I'm under the impression that Texas A&M is pretty conservative so my take would be that you'd be better off toning your look down, but as EW noted, if you're wild enough, some people already know you for your look.

Seeming like you have good taste is generally a good idea in rush, so it's possible that if you look too wild people could think you were tacky and/or trashy.

Why chance it? Can't you do an understated version of your look and have the best of both worlds: being yourself and being appropriate for the events?

I think you may as well go through rush as you normally are, unless you plan to "tame it down" all through college.

I would be surprised to have bid a prim and proper girl, only to have her showing up at the first chapter meeting with crazy hair and makeup.

I was looking at it a little differently. I don't think many chapters are afraid of having crazy hair and makeup on a member, but they'd be a little nervous about the PNM who didn't seem to know what was appropriate for recruitment.

If she's coming through recruitment like THIS, what would she be like usually, kind of thinking.

I personally think that full on party make-up wouldn't be appropriate for recruitment. It's a more "everyday" make-up kind of environment.

However, you have to be yourself. It would be very odd if you were to tone your make-up down for rush, get a bid, and then show up to sorority events with crazy make-up. You could find yourself not really fitting in because you changed your looks just so you could join.

A hump like Tracy Turnblad (not necessarily flipped up ends)? I always thought teased hair was popular in the Deep South. I guess you have to tease your hair with the humidity! My hair is so flat because it is so fine. No matter how much I tease my hair and no matter how much hairspray I use, I can never get it to be full.

I've lived in Texas all my life, and I will admit, there are some ladies in Dallas with big hair... but it is nothing like Tracy Turnblad.... I'm not sure I've ever seen girls with big hair like that.

Yeah, I would say big hair is more common with older generations or with decades past (um, 80s anyone?)... not common with the college set, or really anyone under 40.

I'm really enjoying the men's input in this thread. It's funny AND constructive!

And I love the AWITY?

To the OP, I don't know Texas rush, but I'll go along with the advice that you shouldn't "change" yourself for rush anywhere. It's one thing to dress appropriately and adjust if that's what you normally do in similar circumstances, but if outside of rush you'd wear what you wear everywhere you go, then be true to yourself and see if you find a sisterhood that appreciates who you really are. Just be prepared in case that sisterhood isn't there.

I think the OP knows what she is facing at TAMU. If she is a sophomore, or a freshman for that matter she knows. It is the MOST conservative campus in conservative Texas and her "look" will not sit well with most chapters. I agree with Nittanyalum, just be yourself but be prepared if you don't fit into a sisterhood on that campus. And, yes, you will need references from your hometown. No ifs, ands or buts. Good luck! I wish you the best.

Since she is already at the school i would wonder what her fellow students think of her look. i don't know Texas, but have guy friends who went to A&M. They said the sororities are really concervative, but their definition and mine might be different. I would say that she should ask friends at her school, especially one who are in sororities what they think. Especially if people are already going to know that is how she dresses, if it was me and I knew her and she came up to me totally different I would wonder what changed about her just her hair or is her personality different too. This is only my opinion, but I have known girls who dress one way to try and fit in with a group, they don't fit in and then go looking for a different group and then change the way they dress ect. I would assume this is what she is doing, but this is just me. I say, ask people at your school because they know what you look like and what would go over and not go over.

Texas A & M is very competitive, recommendations are usually needed. Do a search on recommendations and Texas recruitment. I hope this will help!

Big hair + Texas collegians = not really happening anymore, thank goodness!!!

Good luck going through at A&M; I chose TCU but my family is full of Aggies.

Minor suggestion: if you really like being creative with makeup, tone it down to one thing standing out. Maybe have some fun with a pretty eyeshadow one day, and then a bold lipstick the next... just a thought.

Nonetheless, do NOT mold yourself completely to fit the sororities unless you will be happy changing until graduation.

Then here's an anecdote for you:

My wife had a chapter sister who went through a can of hairspray a week. (This was the 80s, after all). One time when they were doing a candle pass, the flame got a little to close to all that aerosaled structure, and poof!
