My take on the movie
***Don't read if you don't want it ruined***
Marky Mark was sent into the future of another planet, where apes ruled. at the end, he found out that the oberon was sent into the past of that planet, where they looked for him. They lived many years (hence why they are old in the transmission) in peace with the apes, with both species flourishing. then Simos (CMOS? ) led the apes in a rebellion against the humans.
When Mark escapes, he goes back to earth, in his own present or the future, it doesn't really matter. He sees the Thade statue and the apes pull up in modern day human technology, meaning they're advanced enough to have come up with this on their own, or at least to use and improve what the humans invented. that doesn't matter either.
My theory on how present day earth is ruled by apes: Remember when the two apes showed Thade where Wahlbergs pod crashed? He then killed them both. He is the only one that knows where it is, aside from the few that Mark showed. He is left alive at the end, and perhaps jailed or whatever. He goes back, gets the pod, fixes it, and goes to earth, which is probably programmed on autopilot. he lands on earth sometime in the past, perhaps a couple hundred years ago, and leads a revolution, civil rights movement, or whatever and succeeds, hence a statue in his honor. i'd say they might have a separate but equal status with humans, or perhaps treat them like they did in the original set of movies right after the ape revolution.
i think this covers it. i'm sure there are holes in my theory though.

I didn't put that much thought into the ending. I'd assumed that Marky Mark (minus the Funky Bunch, apparently) landed on Earth (hence the Lincoln Memorial), but at a Wrinkle in Time, another gap in the Space-Time continuum, so to speak, so it was an alternate time possibility. When I was reading another review of the film, the reviewer indicated that Tim Burton had put all these "clues" throughout the movie to hint at the ending to come, but I must have missed ALL the clues, as did the other 5 people with whom I attended to the movie.
I thought the movie was "ok". Although the racial analogies between US/earth and the ape planet were nice attempt...I kept thinking "Amistad" when they had the branding and the neck chains. Clearly, that was not sitting well with me at all. Secondly, I kept thinking "Four Legs Good, Two Legs Back"...Amistad and Animal Farm. There were a few niggling holes in the story that kept bothering me as well.

I can see your "wrinkle" theory happening too. I think mine might be more along the lines of the original though, at least as far as Thade getting in his pod and going to earth. It could be a bit farfetched that he figured out how to use it, but they never explained how they flew the spaceship in "Escape From the Planet of the Apes" At least I don't think they did...

That makes sense. I totally forgot all about the pod that Mark arrived in, and the fact that Thade was the only one who knew about it. I didn't think it would make sense for Thade to be able to use the ship which was disabled and out of fuel, but it does make sense that he got to the pod and used it.

Doesn't anyone else remember that Mark's pod was underwater and Apes are afraid of drowning? How could Thade have gotten it out??? And even if he did get it out, that pod was busted to hell.

He was crazy. Crazy people/apes do crazy things. He could also force humans to do it. This is sci-fi, anything can happen

The writing behind the statue of "Ape"raham Lincoln (har dee har har) was something about General Thade...in other words, the dude is down, but not out!!

I'm sure there could be some way of getting to the pod. And didn't the writing in the Lincoln Memorial say something about Thade saving the planet or something like that?
