I have a huge case of the summertime blahs. I don't think that I've ever been this bored my whole life. There's nothing to do because my town is really small. I go to work, then I come home. I actually can't wait to get back to school, which is pretty unusual for me. I can't wait to see my friends, and make some new ones. Just a couple more months...

newbie, you are so wise. you are such an asset to greekchat, sweetie!!!

yes, i agree that whenever i see him, no matter what, i will always feel something for him (and for all the exes that will soon follow in the future)--just because you are right, he DOES and will always have a special place in my heart, where all memories are stored...and so life then goes on.

but yeah, summertime blahs do suck. i am actually thankful i work at blockbuster and i put the 5 a week free rentals to good use (i just finished watching Anywhere But Here and Outside Providence)....

Heya! There were a couple posts ^^^^ up there about finding a summertime job. A good place to look is at local baseball stadiums, if there are any near you. (Well, duh. If they were far away, they wouldn't be local. Oy. Sometimes I scare me.) Anyway, most of the time they pay well, and they ONLY hire for the summer. So you don't have to worry about them tellin' you you can't work there, because you go to college through the year. As for summertime blahs... I'm starting to despise weekends because I have nothing to do. -.- Eh, Can't wait till it gets warmer out here. I'll be swimming! Whee!

Yeah, that is cool. I have about 10 copies of the Houston Chronicle from August 25, 1992 with the headline, "250,000 Told to Flee Andrew." And about 5 Copies of the september 1 Miami Herald with the Headline, "Andrew Wreaks Havoc on S.Florida." Too cool. Have them framed. Enjoy it.

Hey Lifesaver,

As much fun as it was having a tropical storm with my name...I hated being hassled about it. My friends and family would make the stupidest comments like..."When are you gonna make it stop raining?" and stuff like that. I still haven't decided what I'm going to do with all of the papers yet. I think I'm going to frame at least one headline and then maybe put they others all around my room.

Folks!!! Since I'm probably one of the older ones up in GC, why aren't you gaining any professional experiences in your majors??? You all should be in some kind of internship program or career experience. I dayum sho wish I had the time to feel the summertime blahs. But I have to work my ass off so hard that I never get the time to worry!!! You'll be older longer than you are younger!!! Get it together!! If you need help, hit me up on the email. I work at a university.

And ladies, you know why your boys broke with you right when the "summer" started... Don't you?

AKA: For myself, I am in the communications field. The only exp. I can get this summer is a minimum wage job for 20 hours a week or internships. So I am trying my luck with getting them in the fall/winter. Do you know if it is easy to get any internships (any field) during the school year or in the summer?

Cool

ZTAMich,
Sorry to hear your summer is not going so well either . I've been counting down to when school starts practically since I got home!

Even though I got a job, it sucks major ass. I'm barely going to make $500 this summer, because I never get scheduled for more than 18 hrs a week I'm just not in the mood to do retail anymore. Internships were filled long ago by friends-of-friends-of-friends at the few companies willing to offer them.

Oh well, mabe July will be better...

AHHHHH!!!! i have no time for summertime blahs! I'm taking 9 hours of class, working full time and trying to keep my sanity at home! I can't wait until i get back to school though - even school doesn't feel like work compared to this! How do people who go to school and work full time do it?!?!?! I am barely keeping up with my studies and having enough time to sleep in the day, let alone have any type of social life or tanning time

Oh I feel much better now bc I enjoy one of my jobs. I have a great job working M-F as a camp counselor. On the weekends I work at Lonestar as a waitress. i am a horrible waitress- I am nice though plus this is my first waitress job. I don't have a car and I can't afford once bc my parents won't take out any more parent loans so I need to pay for my schooling, sorority dues and rent, try to afford a car, plus clothes and a cell phone. My life stinks plus my bf just dumped me bc he'd rather hang out w/ his fraternity brothers!

About the internship thing...

In February, I started looking for an internship in my town. I sent my resume to every single architectural/construction/interior design firm in my town. I got a few replies, most of which saying something to the effect of, "we only hire local students". What I think happened is that they didn't read the cover letter, in which I stated that I have lived in my town my ENTIRE life, but saw that I go to school in Rhode Island. I have had a few interviews in my field, but have contacted all sorts of people (my majors are Architecture and Urban Studies), with no luck.

I'm not having much luck with retail, either. Most places already hired their college students (I get out about 2 weeks later than the area colleges) and don't want to hire me if I leave in 2 months. I even got the gasface from Wal-Mart.

So, if there's a sob story to be told, I've got it. To top it all off, I'm not really getting on wel at home..I live in a really small conservative town that's not really going anywhere, and it's causing tension. I've actively considered going back to Rhode Island, because at least there I know I can get a job.

This is a great post because I am also having a terrible time trying to find a job because nobody wants to hire a college student that will be heading away to college in mid-August. I put in so many applications, but once they read and saw that I would be heading off to college they put it back down..haha.. The thing that makes me mad is that I started really early before the high school and local community colleges got out, but still no luck. I guess a high GPA doesn't really matter anymore when it comes to temporary summer jobs. Glad to hear that I am not alone!

well I didn't start out so early but I totally feel for ya. NO ONE wants to hire college kids down here that I can see. High schoolers with less experience are getting hired over me and it makes me SO mad!

I think college students are over qualified for most retail jobs that aren't in a college town. I hate my job - I stand around thinking "I'm worth more than this - I'll be a senior in college - I've got a 3.79 - yet I'm spending my summer straightening video game boxes and being pushed around by a know-it-all manager" Not to mention, I only work 15 hours a week! Not a great way to make much money

The only way I was able to get this job is because I had worked there for 2 other summers, and I promised I'd work on weekends when I came home and over Christmas (which isn't going to happen now because I'm moving to a town about 30 min away - and I'm not going to commute for 5.40/hr!!!)

And about not reading cover letters - I live close to the Stennis Space Center in MS. I've had friends work at the Naval Research Labs office there. I've emailed my resume 5 times maybe. The only time I got a response, they wanted to interview me for full time! They didn't even read that I was looking for a summer job!!!!
