That's very cool. I heard Sigma Pi is trying to start a colony here at Cleveland State last semester. I wish them the best of luck. It's always great to see more greek organizations expanding.

Congrats to the Sigma Pi boys - I expect nothing but excellence from the chapter there. We have a chapter here at Bwater State ( eta eta ) and I can honestly say that I am in love with every single one of those brothers. They are a great presence on campus, not just with the fraternity, but other organizations as well. We actually are supposed to do a bunch of stuff with them seeing as they are our "unofficial" brother chapter. But I'm gonna stop because I could talk about them forever. Haha.
but back to the first line - congrats to colonizing boys !

Right now Sigma Pi has like 30 guys. They got a lot of the football players and will be participating in DG's Anchore Splash.

Sigma Pi in the southeast
Actually, Sigma Pi is already at the University of Alabama. We colonized in Fall 03, chartered that spring, and just finished up our second year in our house.
I heard at our conference last summer that our expansion program is getting very aggressive and has turned their attention to the southeast. They are hoping to break into Tennessee at both UT or Vanderbilt hopefully soon. Personally, I want to see us recolonize at Ole Miss.

Well right now the Greek Community isn't really sure what is going on with Sigma Pi. The don't participate in anything that everyone else does. They didn't even do Greek Week. They just seem to keep to themselves. I also heard that the reason that they are here is because the football coach is a Sigma Pi alum. (Just in case some of you don't know our team was said to be the worst in the nation according to ESPN). And most of the guys that are part of the Sigma Pi colony are all football players. There is nothing wrong with that but if they want the Greek Community to except them they should try to make themselves known.

This colony is 3 months old. What do you expect them to do, build a Nasa spaceship? Give them a break. They are barely colonizing, and just getting to know eachother. Most of them probably don't even know what greek week is. Once they see everything, expect them to make a big splash in the fall semester.

What I expect from a colony no matter how old they are is to participate. Right now we also have a Sigma Chi colony and they are very active in the Greek community. They participate in a lot of thing and actually try to get to know what it is to be part of the Greek Community at NMSU. Right away where they setting up socials and events so the college and the Greek community could notice them. The way the most NMSU community feels is just because the Coach was in the rest of the team should be in it too.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for Greek expansion. But when a group isolates themselve just because the are the football team (and not a very good one) and think they don't have to do anything else to be accepted. I would really like to see Sigma Pi become a full chapter but if they are going to be like "we are better then the rest of the Greeks because we are all athletes" (this is the attitude that we kinda get from them) then I'm not sure I would really like them. If a colony is barely starting wouldn't they like to get respect and get to know people from all the chapters. They haven't had one single event. No social no nothing. I would have at least expected them to have a social with at least one of six sororities on campus.

Sounds like one of them outright dissed you. You probably thought one of those football guys are hot, and he probably thought you were short and chunky. I don't know.
Jk, but hey maybe I'm right. Who knows?
Anyways...Why don't you try to get to know them? Maybe they are shy? Go up to them and talk to them. Your sn has the name "flirt" in it. Go "flirt" with them.
Remember, they are only 3 months old. Who cares what Sigma Chi does. That is Sigma Chi and the way they handle things. If Sigma Pi has a bunch of football players, then you have to understand that being a varsity athlete demands, DEMANDS alot. They simply can't just skip practice because "oh hey, theres a social with AxiD! Like WHOOPEE!"

Then they shouldn't create a half-assed version of a fraternity and expect everyone to be OK with it because they are athletes. At many schools, the sports teams have "houses" where they all hang out, just like fraternities...and hold parties...so if they're not going to do any of the things beyond that that have to do with Greek life, why bother?

Perhaps they're just not ready, from a time standpoint or financially, to participate in greek week. It might not be a priority to them right now. There were a handful of (long-established, but smaller) fraternities on my campus who didn't participate in greek week because of the cost. Also, on a smaller house, it's a big pressure on the members because that's more and more work they have to do. I would think that getting the group up and running would be more important than putting together a song and dance skit.
I don't know about the socials. But I do know that most groups, when colonizing, have alumni and at least one advisor closely watching and guiding them. Maybe Sigma Pi just does things differently than Sigma Chi or concentrates on some things first. I think more time needs to be given to them before they're judged so much.

I don't think getting upset at Sigma Pi is going to do any good. If they're not really into the Greek part of being a fraternity, their chapter will reflect that and will suffer for it.
I guess I see that this is a problem that will take care of itself in time. Either the chapter will recruit more guys and expand out of its clique, or it will fail to attract enough guys and fold.

Alert the media, this is one of the rare occasions where I agree with Rudey!
When I was an undergrad, I really couldn't stand most other greeks and sometimes dreaded having to put up with them at Greek Week events.
I didn't join for greek week or to have functions with other greeks. I joined for my particular sisters and the things that we did as a house.
Greeks can be so critical of each other like this. They're not doing anything illegal. They'll either survive or disappear. If they're not hurting you ("you" in a general sense), what does it matter?
