I was born and raised on the North shore, and am a lifelong die-hard Cubs fan, but I never knew that Cubs and Sox fans disliked each other. Where I grew up, we were indifferent to the Sox, but no bad feelings. For myself, I am thrilled for the White Sox because it gives the City something it hasn't had in 88 years. Yeah, I wish it was the Cubs, but it's the next best thing.

Anyway I thought someone might enjoy this:

"In addition to winning their first World Series
in 88 years, the Chicago White Sox eclipsed
Bobby Brown's record of beating Houston (4)
times in one week."

- mayor: Richard M. Daley

OH SNAP!

Anyway, it didn't feel like there was a World Series without the Yankees.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I think this is how most northsiders feel.

Aren't Northsiders and "North Shorers" different?

Maybe it's more of a Southside thing, but, trust me, most of us HATE the Cubs. You'll never go to a bar on Western Avenue and see a Cubs game on, unless it's the Crosstown Classic. I've seen people removed from these bars wearing Cubs gear.

A northsider is anyone living north of Madison. That would include the North Shore.

Edited because I'm a stickler for grammar

Northsiders are from within the city limits. North shore would be the suburbia North of the city but along Lake Michigan (think of the neighborhoods for virtually every John Hughes film, Risky Business, Ferris Bueller, etc.). I haven't done a study, but I would guess that most North shore dwellers are Cub fans. If southsiders hate the Cubs, as one poster said, I would guess that it may be because the media - both locally and nationally - gives the Cubs WAY more attention that the Sox. Growing up the Cubs had the media outlet of WGN, which broadcast on TV and radio, every Cub game all season. (Even though the Cubs ALWAYS had a losing record.) The Sox were never on TV. Recently WGN has picked up a lot of Sox games, but I guess the damage was done. Considering that the 2 teams were equally bad all those years, there wasn't much sense in the Cubs getting more attention - they were just always favored, and maybe the Sox fans felt like the unloved step-child or something. I just know that my household and friends never cared one way or another about the Sox. This was before interleague play, so there was never a reason to pay any attention. I think it is great that they won - at least someone from that great city did.

ETA: The term "Northsiders" is also used to refer to the Cubs, so a lot of people who don't technically live on the North side will refer to themselves as "Northsiders" if they are Cub fans.

I wouldn't say northsiders are limited to just the city. Most suburbanites in the north/northwestern suburbs refer to themselves as "northsiders" just as most suburbanites to the south refer to themselves as "southsiders".

North Shore includes some of the suburbs near the lake, and some just west of there. Roughly, it's from Evanston to Lake Forest. Waukeegan, Zion, etc. are not North Shore! It's not just right on the lake, either. For instance, Northbrook is usually considered part of the North Shore.

Way back in the '70s, White Sox games were carried on Channel 44 before it became a Spanish langauge network. This was pre-cable, so the reception wasn't great. The Cubs and the Sox both stunk, but, thanks to Bill Veck, the Sox could be entertaining to look at. Anyone remember them wearing shorts?

I'm glad the Sox took the series. I like seeing teams win when they haven't in a long time.

Wasn't Channel 44 WFLD? The same station that broadcast the Banana Splits?

I don't *think* they were WFLD; I think 32 and 44 were always different stations. I do know that 44 had the best cartoon ever - Speed Racer!!!

WFLD has always been 32, at least since the mid 70s.

I don't remember channel 44, although I do remember 60 & 66! What I wouldn't give to have one of those old yellow and black channel 60 t-shirts...
