$2.53 yesterday. I was thrilled, until I passed a station with $2.48! BUT, they are saying $5 by the end of next week because of Rita's impact on the oil refineries.

Perdue is an idiot. Not did he only put parents in a jam by having their kids stay home so unexpectedly he cause another gas scare. Most gas stations around me are empty again because people ran out when Perdue said their was a gas crisis. Hello to over $3.00 in gas. Your stupid political stunt to tried to make you look like a hero for saving gas has made things worse. Also it is expected a work slowage all over Georgia due to parents haveing to call in to watch their children.

My husband and I are out, our kids are not.

He's walking around smiling because he expects some Grand Romance...no way! I'd rather go bungee-jumping!

Parents protest Georgia school closures

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Hundreds of thousands of Georgia children got a break from classes Monday after Gov. Sonny Perdue asked schools to close for two days as a hedge against possible fuel shortages, leaving many parents struggling to arrange child care.

The shortages that Perdue feared never materialized, largely because Hurricane Rita proved less damaging to Gulf Coast refineries than initially expected.

Parents learned of the governor's decision late Friday afternoon. Many families had to scramble over the weekend to make alternate arrangements for their children.

Two mothers brought their grade-schoolers to the Capitol on Monday for a "teach-in" on the steps, just yards from Perdue's office.

"It's certainly caused a lot of problems for working parents today, and it causes problems for these kids who need to be learning and not just hanging out, watching the Cartoon Network at home," said mother Randy Faigin David of suburban Atlanta.

Meanwhile, gas supplies were moving freely through pipelines that serve Georgia.

"We don't expect any problems if we can get the refineries up in three to five days," said Ric Cobb, executive director of the Georgia Petroleum Council.

Purdue is a goner come election time. Even many Republicans dislike him as well. He has made a lot of stupid choices since he has been in office. He really doomed himself earlier in his term when he broke his promise to bring back the old GA flag with the conferate flag portion of it. I think even Hoosier would probably admit it doesn't look good for Sonny. I heard some republicans are calling for another republican to run against him because they fear they will lose the office. We need someone like Zell even though the turned turncoat on the Democrats.

The GA dems, libs, and union members can turn out a crowd - with little notice and a few charter buses and church vans - for anything. The protesting mothers all seemed to be dragging along kids too young for public schools, and I think I saw the same bunch last week posing as vegans protesting in front of Honey Baked Ham.

In the past four years, Republicans have won both GA Senate seats, the Governorship, and both houses of the legislature - I don't think Sonny ever promised to bring back the Confederate flag, and no Republican campaigner or voter cares.

The flag, the Hope scholarships, school holidays, and gas taxes are not viable issues in GA, and dems who make them campaign issues are facing losses like Murphy, Barnes, Walker, etc. The dems who campaign with them will get lots of publicity from TV and from the Atlanta newspaper (on the front page and editorial page), but their influence is now minimal.

Besides, Sonny has so much campaign cash bankrolled that he's secure.

Thank G*d. Maybe it'll actually feel safe to go back home for a visit, instead of feeling like my state has been taken over by carpetbaggers.

Had you said this about 5-6 years ago, I would have agreed with you, but I don't think we need a psychotic Yosemite Sam wannabe as the governor of Georgia.. but then again, I've been gone long enough not to know who would be a viable replacement.

We had a ton of parents at my work who have either been out of work or late do to their kids being at home. I thought of this problem as soon as the announcement was made. Did Perdue not?

The gas stations downtown are all out. The gas stations by my house still have gas but it's up to $2.89 a gallon.

Yah and he caused a gas crisis because he closed the school for gas. Real smart. Rita did not even cause that much damage and oil has been going down. Gas will to once people stop panicing.
