Is this a public school? If so, the school has no business telling you what you can and cannot put in your name, or whether or not you can be a "sisterhood". If you're at a public school, feel free to tell them that you'll do as you please regarding your right to free association.

Not if they hope to receive university support and funding.

I feel that if Greeks are truly representative of the school's "best of the best," then those best should follow the rules set forth by the school. And if this GLO (founded in Africa) has sought university recognition at a school where GLOs were banned (per the OP and the sororities operating in secret) and been denied, then perhaps the group should work as an interest group of that GLO and function under another name, and work on petitioning the admin to work together toward a common understanding to communicate the need for such a group.

If they were NPC, that would be right. Sometimes, in order for change to happen, you need to have a little bit of revolution. Do what you want and dare them to tell you not to. You can absolutely be the "best of the best" and still have the administration feel threatened by you somehow.

I checked out that school's website, I believe they're public.

To have to "petition" the administration for something that is your right is silly.

Good point, KT! I tend to think of everything in NPC terms, since we're very "by the book."

The students do have a right to assemble, and the university has an obligation to protect the students. If the university feels that this assembly impairs their obligation to the student body, then they would ban such a group from assembly in order to fulfill their obligation of pseudo-guardian over the student population.

If the group isn't seeking official university recognition, by all means, assemble. But if they have a defunct Greek Life (which is very likely defunct for a valid reason) and there is a proposal on the table to admit a GLO, then I could see their hesitation.

If they operate outside of university guidelines, then they are not an official student group, are they? Is it part of their international to function outside of collegiate student activities? If this is the case, they need not restrict themselves to membership and recruitment at this one college and are open to accept anyone who is a student anywhere within a reasonable geographic distance, correct?

Looks like a statement of purpose to me, not a motto. The statement of purpose would be in public documents.

"So let me get this straight. You're not allowed to be called a sorority, but these other nationals are all operating "secretly"? What school is this?

Sigma has never had a chapter there either. If this truly is the case, I will alert our HQ because it's just a group of girls using our name.

Nor has ADPi and I have alerted our HQ.

What is with all the crazy random posts lately? I think we should make an effort to be courteous and help new people on the boards, but I'm wondering how many more of these we will get.

I wonder if that recent article that mentioned GC and fratty.net have anything to do with the flood of randomness!

It sounds highly odd to me. It sounds like it is just a rumor, but worth paying attention to for sure.
