What's in a Name????

I went to school with a girl named PRENTELLA PEW(I kid you not!) This is her real name. She was teased, laughed at, etc...

I thought this guy in our neighborhood was named Shawn. One day he stopped by our house and some how that conversation came up about names. He said, you know Shawn is not my real name. My sister asked him what his real name was. He said THASHAWNBE
(THA - SHAWN - BEE) Once he said that I tried real hard not to glance at my sister, because we would not be able to hold in our laughter. His parents were wrong for that!

I have a headache pronouncing these names and these are real people too! Help us!!!!

I feel so sorry for some of these kids with these names (Alize isn't bad)but one of my girlfriends told me about this one two weeks ago: Ahgazcha (I-got-cha)Jeanne. Imagine your grandchild, niece, etc with this name.

Okay, I had to add. What are the most awkward spellings you have seen for, slightly, comon names or strange pronunciations for normally spelled names? FEMALE was a good one.

I knew a girl in college who spelled her name Agnes. We were calling her Agnes, but she'd alwasys correct us and say "My name is ah-nyez. We were like "whatever...don't try to be shmancy now girl."

I knew another girl in high school who's name was Shante, but spelled it Chaunteaux. I was like "Yo' mama trippin." In my best ettogha (pig latin so as not to offend anyone) voice.

My name is actually NOT spelled the "typical" way, but I feel like there's a desire to keep some anonymity since several people referenced their names but didn't say what it was, so I will abide.

I actually knew a girl, while she went by her middle name of Iesha, her first name was Knoughenia (I will give 500 cyber dollars to the one of you who pronounces it correctly).

RAIN MAN: Kahlil nor Akeem are African names. They are Arabic, which is as different from African as names like Raymond or Charles. Africans came by those Arabic names, the same way we came by our European names.

BTW, I picked Eugene Rayburn in remembrance to the late Gene Rayburn who hosted my favorite game show, Match Game from 1962-84.
As for Janet Marcia, I thought I was in there with that one Shoot, it's a lot better than Rebecca Jane (one I thought up very briefly). BTW, my last name is a VERY common last name, but thanks anyways.

Eugene or Beulah? for a baby? Rain Man, leave those alone. i can't stand for a baby to have some old person's name. especially a name that reminds me of a maid (BEULAH from a 50s TV show). to me, that's right up there w/these African-American (not African) names. and people wonder why:

a. teachers stereotype children early on w/these "buckwild" names
b. children have attitudes when asked to repeat/spell their names

these names are crazy not unique. in order for your child to stand out, make sure they're educated, have a talent, etc. naming your child Plaxico or Beyonce is NOT IT.

My doctor's name was Printella, and I used to work with a woman named Velveeta. How we met was embarrassing, b/c I was clowning ths woman's pic since she got employee of the week, I thought she was joking with the cameraman, and she was, of course, right behind me as I went on and ON. Sigh.

Nia Imani seems a bit of overkill, but that's MHO.
