What's in a Name????
 

greetings sorors and sisterfriends....

i am proud to say that i am the big sister to a proud little baby girl that my father and his girlfriend had on December 14th.

the question is names...we anticipated a little boy that we had prepared a long list of beautiful names for boys. my father and i would name the baby if it was a boy and my father's girlfriend would name it if it was a girl.

so since it is a girl...

the that was picked was cleshea pronounced cliche with the accent. i was absolutely horrified because it sound like one of those ghetto names that people name their children hence......

alize (a liquor)
chaniequa (i have several friend with this name)
shawnshanique (huh?)
boquisha ( i do know someone that has that name)
passion (sounds like a fruit)
desire (we are people thinking)
precious ( i will leave that one alone)

i don't want to sound rude but i want to know where they they pick these names from? are they suppose to sound black or afrocentric?

just the other day at my office someone was laughing their head off because some submitted a resume with the name Alize Renee Jenkins *i am so serious* and of course they were not taking seriously, so their resume was overlooked.

I would like to know your opinions?

Too funny! I was just chatting with a friend and asked him about his friend named Boomquisha! ROFL

I know a young girl named....get this...Escalante! Her mother said she liked that car. Why do we do this to our children..our future.....and the first female president of the United States is Shalika Shalaka Jones!

Hope I didn't offend one who has the same name.

Just curious though...was Alize (I feel stupid just typing the name) qualified for the position?

I have a old high school friend who plans to name her child Krystal Chandelere(Crystal chandelier). Don't they realize what pain they are going to put these kids through? That sound like some stripper's name! Alize Jenkins....isn't that Lovita's full name on the "Steve Harvey Show"?

THat is a problem. BUT I have the top of crazy names. I saw a girl at the mall who was really cute/adorable/precious. I asked her mom what her name was and she said...


Mafiladida (sp). I thought it sounded familiar. Like a Run DMC song. But SHE actually said. "You know like My Fila Adida." I was like NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!! You don't name your child after a pair of shoes.

I have to tell this story...
I used to work in a shoe store and one day this lady came in with her three children. The fact that she looked like the poster child for "Ghetto Queens" She had the multi colored air brushed nails that were approximatley 4 inches long. The kool-aid red weave in a pin curl ponytail the big bangle earrings (three in each ear) I mean this girl was UNBELIEVABLE! So she is looking around meanwhile, her children are trying to tear the store apart. She wasn't saying anything at first but after a few comments from me and nasty looks from the other customers she finally decided to do something about her children. She had two little girls and a boy. first she called the boy.. she kept callig him VASI.. I'm thinking hmm what kind of name could a boy have that has VASI in it? I couldn't figure it out.. She told the boy to get his sisters and come over there which he didn't do right away so she said it again.. and again and again.. Finally, she got fed up and called them one by one. She yelled COURVOSIER, TEQUILA, AND ALIZE GET YOUR A## OVER HERE NOW! I nearly choked on air!! I had hell trying to hold a straight face while she was in the store. It was so bad I had to call my friend on the phone and tell her about it before I exploded. When she finally left..the ENTIRE store broke into laughter. I thought that was crazy. I used to hate my name when I was little but I love it now, especially after hearing that!

Please be careful about what you name your children...

NOOOO!!! Say it ain't so! I think my name is country, but I'll take it any day over Tequila.

I had a couple of laughs myself yesterday over names. The local paper printed children's letters to santa and some of the kids' names... I wondered how long it took for them to learn how to spell it.

Wooo! I will never again complain about my name. It is difficult to pronounce because for some reason people switch two of the letters and pronounce it wrong. But once you get it right it is eloquent.

My husband and I are expecting and I have been getting suggestions on names from a lot of people. One of our primary concerns is can my child get a job with this name. When he or she becomes a major star in whatever they do are people going to look at me and say what the hell were you on when you named your child.

I must admit I had to help my unborn nieces dodge many a ghetto name. My sister and I are night in day in taste. Destiny and Desire were among the suggested names. When she asked me what I thought I said "I am thinking Hooker, stripper, porno star, do I need to continue?"

Just wanted to chime in on the subject. I could give you ladies a neverending list of names to add here. My favorite? A young lady named Zetoyra, but it's pronounced Zee-tore-uh -- what happened to the "y"? If you pronounce the "y", you are pronouncing it incorrectly. How many times is she going to have to correct the world?

Congratulations, MaMaBuddha, on your new sibling. I also have a baby sibling. My only question, Ms. Buddha, is, the connotation (sp?) that comes with naming a child "cliche"? Isn't a cliche something played out and tired? No offense intended!

In addition, since we are on the topic, how does everyone like Condalezza Rice's name? I personally like it. It comes from a French (I think) singing command that means "with sweetness" [con dalezza]

Young MARRIED woman had her first son (after 3 daughters). Not sure who the Daddy is: Ronnie, her Husband, or her boyfriend, Zach. So, she decided to name the boy:

Zacharious LaRon

Do you see it? ZACHarious for the Boyfriend (the more likely candidate) and LaRON for the Husband!!!!!!!!

I do kind of like Zacharious (pronounced like: Zach-carry-us).

I'm Laughing so hard right now, I'm surprised I can even type this response! I have 2 name stories, however, I don't think they beat the mama who gave birth to a bar of cognac, hard liquor and more!!! I mean really, Courvoisier and tequila?????
Anyhoo, I had a neighbor growing up who we always called Derek. One day his mom came outside to tell him that the phone was for him, and called him P. I asked him why, and he said his real name started w/a P. Of course I had to go and ask what the real name was, and I really think I should have just left it alone. His full name is.... Parferion Yinka Pachedoux!!!!!!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif But wait, his last name is Derek. OK then. She gave me some explanation a few years later that had to do with Dairy Queen, but I really did not want to hear anymore. I knew I was not going to be able to hold it together without bursting out in laughter, so I shook my head and changed the subject.
The second story has to do with a fashion show I was in a few years ago. One of the ladies in the show was asking me if I thought her sons had potential in the modeling industry. Growing up I had a friend that pronounced her name Fa-mallay. One day I happened to run across her name written down spelled F-E-M-A-L-E. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif Now, anyone with half a brain knows that is FEMALE!!! Apparently (and this is the truth I kid you NOT) her mother (never a Rhode scholar mind you) thought the midwife named her daughter for her. She thought this because she saw "Female" on the birth announcement the morning following the birth of her child.
