These parents are afraid for the safety of their children. I can respect that. I think that there are problems with violence, alcohol, and drug use and abuse in colleges that extend beyond the greek system.

We are frightened for our kids! We got away with some of the stuff we did because the world was a little bit different then. Hazing existed on my campus. (I was in a sorority.) But no one died from alchohol poisoning. We had quite a run in our home state for awhile. At least one frat pledge a year was dying from alchohol poisoning or drowning while swimming intoxicated. Yes, that is scary to us. Add in the factor that date rape drugs did not exist then. There are more factors to consider. Why do you think we don't want out kids to repeat our mistakes?

We know what greeklife has meant to us. I feel no need to defend myself, my sorority, or my decisions.

Haha, that could describe life at Boston University - none of the above.
We got by (although football would have been nice).

Some of us were fortunate to be part of BU when there was a football team. My GLO (and our brother org, KKPsi) were in existence almost completely because of marching band at BU.
I will say though-- even when the team existed, there weren't tailgating parties, and with the exception of one season, you could have fit everyone attending a football team in Walter Brown with room to spare.

They did until the end of the 1995-1996 season. Then Silber decided to eliminate it.

When I first transferred to UPS, there was a SHOOTING on the street behind our house (as in one block off campus since I lived in a campus owned house) that was completely unrelated to the school or greek life or anything. I think parents should be more worried about stuff like that.

I agree. I remember there were a lot of rapes that took place in the town that had absolutely nothing to do with the Greeks/school. It was about a year after I left New Paltz but there was also a big shoot-out in town. All the students were actually stranded in the bars with the lights turned out so the shooters couldn't see in until like 8 in the morning or something like that. Being with my sisters was a positive thing because we travelled in packs anywhere we went so we always felt protected.
