If your girlfriend was still your girlfriend, I really doubt that you'd be so anti-Greek. Or maybe she's not your girlfriend any more because you ARE anti-Greek and she got tired of hearing you criticize something she loves. Or maybe it's because you didn't want her to grow or have friends outside of you.
As far as that thread, it was resolved...the thread starter herself said she was being overly cautious. Please read the WHOLE thread.
Honestly, if your girlfriend had joined any other group and left you, you'd probably hate them too.
ETA that I assumed you are a male. However, if you're female, substitute "friend" for "girlfriend" and it still works.

I didn't know her when I moved in, but I knew the other five roommates. I just never understood the reasons. I thought it was for people that can't make friends themselves, so they turn to frats/sor. Freshman year in college I partied for two weekends at frats, and they just wanted sex. It seems like high school. Watching "Sorority Life" and reading articles. And I know you are going to say sorority life is completely inaccurate, but from the sororities I've been to, it was pretty similar.

I could turn it around and say how I've heard that GDIs don't belong to fraternities and sororities because they couldn't cut it, were cut or don't have the social ability to...
But that'd be entirely stereotypical and of course is completely inaccurate.
So you've heard stereotypes... You don't understand greek life... I doubt anybody here wants to sit and try to convince you of anything. It is a personal choice everyone makes for themselves and it is something that you will not understand unless you have tried it first hand. Lets just leave it at that.

I won't lie. Some organizations fit the stereotype COMPLETELY. Others do not. Not everyone is inclined to join. I'll tell you that my social life went from great to greater when I
And about men wanting sex...
Gee.. shocker
Seriously though, our undergrad chapter (I'm an alum now) emphasizes things such as honor, ettiquette, behaving as gentlemen. Yes, occasionally, we do have slip ups. We do have members that all out of line. It is a strong enough group of guys that we are able to help those guys back on their feet.
It's a stronger group than any group of friends I've had. We also had assetts that any group of friends I've had never had (make sense?) such as a house, a social schedule written on a calendar, interaction with other fine organizations of the opposite gender. Cool stuff like that.
I enjoyed it. You may not. I for one have no hard feelings over that fact.

If you didn't know her when you moved in, how do you know that she "became a different person"? Did she stiff y'all on the rent?
And all I can say about Sorority Life is...when you were living with your roommates, did you stay there rent free? Did you have drama 24/7? Did you have a camera crew filming your every move? Did you not have radios or TVs? I didn't think so. Life is not like an MTV show - ANY MTV show.
And like ktsnake said, duh - college guys want to get laid. It's the same everywhere, not just fraternity parties.

With that same logic, i went to two theater parties while in college and saw everyone dressed in costumes, so does that mean that all theater people dress in costumes all the time?
Guys want sex in college, in a fraternity, or not. Period. College kids have sex. College kids drink. Fraternity members drink and fraternity members have sex.... but not all of them. This is kind of the rectangle/square thing.
I hated sororities my freshman year. i thought they were stuck up prissy biznitchs and couldnt get a date without a "frat" boy on their arm.
I went through rush hoping my roommate would join. the girls I met during that time were not the kind of girls that were socially inept... these were smart, sweet, funny women that were looking for a place that was a home away from home, or looking for a group to get more involved. Some people join the student activites committees, some people join an intramural team, some people join fraternities and sororities and get the best of all this and more. You have the ability to get involved more, to learn more about yourself, your strengths, your weaknesses... etc...
You can learn all of this,of course, without joining a greek org, but some people choose to. Why look down upon them for that?
My take on your roomie situation is she joined a sorority, became extremely involved and chose to follow that route instead of getting closer to her roommates and doing other activities. If she was happy, why do you care? Why begrduge someone happiness, when it doesn't hurt you? It may have hurt your feelings because she chose other people before you, but if you didn't know her before you got there what did you lose?
And what could you have gained by being more open minded? You could have asked her why SHE chose to rush, and why she enjoyed it. Instead you come online and ask a group of pro-greek men and women to explain themselves.
My answer to you is
I joined a sorority and it is none of your damn business why, or what I gained.... but I know what you missed by being narrow minded and closed to learning.
College is an educational experience that doesn't just apply to the classroom.
