Sorry to crash but I just wanted to say that I'm so glad to hear that people in another sorority do not drink in their letters. I think my chapter is the only at my school that has this rule and we are all always in shock when we see other sorority girls wearing letters and drinking or using koozies with letters to hold alcoholic drinks. I am guilty of having a shot glass but it sits on the shelf in my room. I have a koozie with letters too but don't ever use it.
Is the no drinking in letters a national thing for you all? When National visited our chapter we asked about it and they said it is not in our by-laws and for the chapters that chose to uphold it, it just falls under "conduct unbecoming of a Chi Omega".

I am not sure if it is a national bylaw or not...but I know one thing for sure and that is all of the chapters at my school followed the no drinking in letters "rule"!!

Whether it's in the COB or not, I know of no chapter whose bylaws have been approved without that clause. It's a good habit to get into, remembering how you act represents your GLO, whether you like it or not.

I just checked the COB for the policy about this and the text follows.
From the Statement of Policy Regarding Alcohol for Collegiate Chapters:
"No event advertising or artwork (i.e., T-Shirts, cups, banners, programs, favors, etc.) will feature/suggest alcohol."
There is nothing related to this in the sample bylaws in the COB.

I think this may be why our Panhellenic Delegate my junior year (senior year?) was successful in getting the Sigma Chi's to change their theme for Derby Days that year. They were planning on doing a play off of the Absolut advertising, and our PD was able to get the other sororities to agree not to participate (if I'm remembering this correctly) unless they changed their theme. It was a great moment for our chapter!
I wish I had read through the COB as a collegiate more!

I really wish they would post the COB on Pride Online. Most women never see the book at all and it would make things much easier to update if it were online.
Same goes for the green book -- it should be on NPC.org.

I agree 100% with you!! That might make things work a little smoother! Then no one could claim ignorance.

That is a WONDERFUL idea!!!
I think that's one of the ways that places like GreekChat can really help the Greek System - by people who wouldn't necessarily be involved in the policy making process coming up with gems like this!!
Kudos, Sister!!!

I never heard of this "cup rule" either.
I know that adpi coozies were given out at Convention (I think the Second Breakers one - 1999???). If THAT doesn't legitimize them, what would??

In my chapter we were not allowed to DRINK or SMOKE in our letters. Which was fine by me. I think it was hard for some of the smokers in our group, but they dealt with it just fine. If we had koozies, we would just use them for soda. One year a sister made all of us koozies with our personal initials, instead of ADPi.
BTW, KD at my school had to sit down and cross their legs if they were smoking and have a cover around all alcoholic drinks, if there was a label.
It is interesting to see how chapters w/in one sorority or among different sororities all interpret rules/policies.

We had the sit down and cross legs while smoking rule at UNT. But we never had the cup rule while I was active. I dislike going to UNT and seeing ADPi's not following this rule whether they are in letters or not. It just irritates me.

It could be due to the training. Each chapter has their own standing rules and over the years those might change as people leave and newer members take over. Also, the atmosphere on campus might dictate what each sorority does. Just like we didn't have the sitting down rule, your chapter may have done away with it, or just did not pass it on. Maybe you can mention your feelings to the current Exec board.
