How often are you taking him out to potty?? He is still a baby. At his age, a dog has just barely developed the muscle control to learn to hold it.

The general rule of thumb is that dogs can go their number of months in age + 1 hour between potty breaks.

At only 2 1/2 months old, he should not be expected to go more than THREE HOURS between potty breaks at the most. I am a very strong advocate of crate training. At this age, however, I personally think it is a bit much to ask a puppy to go more than 2-3 hours MAX.

I also advise against puppy pads. They usually like to shred them after peeing & pooping on them and then play in the mess It can also be tough to transition the dog to using grass later.

Next, forget the board. Become acquainted with the dog owner's friend... babygates!! I have them at the entrance of nearly every room in my house. I have lots of great resources if you need some help.

Last word of warning about Pugs. With their smushed little faces (correctly called brachyocephalic) they can tolerate very little summer heat. They cannot pant enough to cool themselves off.

Yes don't worry about crating a puppy. It is really a good thing for them. When we got our puppy (not a pug) we crated him during the night when we slept and when we traveled. For during the day we set up pen in the kitchen with Wee Wee pads in case he couldn't hold it and his crate for sleeping. We were very fortunately because he potty trained very easily and I believe part of that was the crate training. Once he was about 6 months we no longer made him sleep in his kennel but he did anyways. Of course now he has progressed to the bed but he still has his crate if he wants it. He is also very protective of his crate. If the cat comes near it he has a hissy fit. One time the cat went it in and started to lie down but was quickly chased out.

he is doing great these past couple of days. i have been taking him out to walk every 2 hours at least (except when i am sleeping at night) and he is going more outside and less in the crate.

he seems happier in the crate too. i keep it across from my bed so he can always watch me.

when i have to work a long day and know i can't come home to walk him i keep him in the kitchen with wee wee pads and newspaper.

but i am trying not to use them otherwise. so many people have told me that dogs who are encouraged to use wee wee pads will think it's okay to pee in the house and this creates problems if you go to someone's house with him.

i have another question. tommorrow is my graduation party. i am having it at a bar with an outdoor patio (fenced in) area. many of my friends have asked to see the dog. is it appropriate to bring him do you think (i have a sherpa bag for him and the bar allows it). i feel that it is MY party so i should do what i want, but my dad pointed out that some people HATE animals and would find this annoying.

Are you kidding?? You actually have "friends" that hate animals and are annoyed by them??

Hi. I decided to bring Darby tonight. I talked to my friend who also has a dog (a pitbull) and she has brought him out before. He has a little bag that he can also go in and fall asleep.

Once I saw a pug. It looked poor so I beat him so hard with my graphite clubs and helped him out.

one of my best friends from high school has a pug who had puppies a few years ago. they'd spray gunk from their noses all over everyone, though. or maybe it was slobber. lol. they were still adorable!

Hey, to all of you Pug-lovers. I just joined a great site, www.pugvillage.com. It has a bulletin board kinda like GC where you can get in touch with other pug owners. I am also joining a Pug Club for Queens and Long Island. It will be a great way to make contacts and from who I've talked to, a good way to find "babysitters" for if I decide to go away. I feel more comfortable leaving him with people who have pugs too. One of my friends said she would watch him but she has a big old pit bull who I am nervous would hurt him even if they were only playing.

Darby Update

Darby is doing really well. He is getting adjusted and I have learned his going out to potty schedule. He still has accidents because he is so little and can't hold it through the night but he is completely spoiled already by my entire family. Everyone wants to always hold him and buy him puppy toys and treats. He is also well known all over my neighborhood already. He is my favorite *boyfriend* in the whole world

OK so I recently joined this group for people with pugs in the NYC area. I have been noticing more and more that people post they bought a pug and don't have time for it and feel bad but it was a spur of the moment decision and blah blah blah. WHY do people do STUPID things like this? It's like saying "OK today I feel like having a baby because they are so cute and adorable." Morons. Okay venting over.

Ah what a cutie. You should go to a local shelter. What area of the country are you in? North Shore Animal League (www.nsal.org) has lots of great adoptable pets for a small adoption fee. I got my 2 kitties there. I wanted a pug for awhile that's why I got mine at a pet store. I know they have pug rescue groups and I might consider going that route in the future but I need a bigger place first
