Anyone have a pug?

I just got a pug puppy yesterday! He is adorable and I love him to pieces already. I am looking to meet other pug/doggie owners in the NYC area who would be interested in having our "children" play together LOL.

I don't live near you, but I have 2 pugs. My mother has 4 pugs. Pugs IMO are the sweetest, most loyal, funniest dogs in the world! After about a year old, they start calming down a bit. They will play like crazy and then want you to love on them...

As I have learned, it is VERY easy for them to injure their eyes. So, be extra careful in watching your hwile it plays. One of mine actually lost his eye. (But, he just like he was personality wise.)

Also, they tend to shed a lot. Learn to like paler colors; the shedding doesn't show up as much:)

Congrats! You've gotten one of the best animals around!

Oh great! Any advice you can give me I would appreciate :) I am learning how to housetrain him now. I have him in his crate but I think I am going to go to Home Depot after work today and buy a big board so I can keep him in the kitchen when I am not home. I feel bad leaving him in his crate :( How did your pug lose his eye? :( I am taking him to the vet on Tuesday to rule out any health problems. He is very young still, born on 3/3/04. Thanks for your help!!!!

He lost it playing with one of our other dogs. At first, we thought he'd been bitten by the dog. Then, we realized it was the result of the dog's claw hitting his eye. He's great now, though.

As far as the housetraining, it takes a while with pugs. You just have to force them to go for a walk or outside for a few minutes and watch until they go. It takes months, to be honest. But, my 10 year-old and my 3 year-old pugs both go outside with no problems now.

PM me if you ever have any questions...

Pug Pug Pug!!! I just love them. I have liked them since I was just little and read a story that had a pug in it. If I ever get another dog, that's what I will get. Right now, I don't think the two kitties would be amused...;)

Oh my gosh!! I want one so bad!! I have loved pugs ever since I was a little girl and saw The Adventures of Milo & Otis. I've been seriously looking at getting one. Pugs are the cutest things in the world!!!!!

I just want to make sure that anyone who is considering owning a pug knows a few things about the breed...

1) As mentioned before in this thread, their eyes are extremely delicate and can develop quite a number of problems.

2) They shed. If you don't want a dog that sheds-- DO NOT GET A PUG...

3) They cannot withstand being outside dogs. Their coat is not thick enough to protect them in the cold winter, but it is too thick to have them as an "outside" dog in the summer. They are housedogs.

4) They claim you as theirs... If you don't want a dog that demands attention and loving, then again -- DO NOT GET A PUG.

Having said those statements, my pugs are like children to me and my family. They are SUCH a joy to have around... I wouldn't trade mine for the WORLD.

hi tippie, you are right, tonight was the second night i have had my pug. my boss's called me randomly at the last minute to take me out for a drink to celebrate my recent graduation from social work school. in any event, i only stayed out for 2 hours and didn't drink much because i was concerned about coming home to my new pet. i don't think getting a pet is something anyone should take lightly. i also have 2 kitties. i recently was contemplating gettng rid of the kitties because my now ex-boyfriend didn't like them, and at the time, i thought he "was the one". what a mistake that would have been. it is a 15 year committment getting any pet and also a great expense. listen to your gut instinct and don't just act on a whim. also regarding my experience and giving up a pet for someone, if the pet doesn't like the person, it usually says a lot about that person. my 2 kitties ran from my ex and the one was having major behavioral problems whenever he was around. they never act like that around anyone else, including the new dog. good luck to everyone whatever you decide. remember though, having pets are like having children. lecture now over :)

You all have given good advice about pugs...you said everything I thought of! I love my pug, but sometimes she's a pain in the arse...we're still battling the whole housetraining relapse thing. :p

I love pugs, they are so cute and friendly. They will do anything to make their human happy. I personaly have a shih-tzu right now, and Little Boy (dont ask about the name) wont like it if I got another child (either would my family or boyfriend) so I just have my Little Boy. But when I marry my boyfriend, we are getting a pug. He just does not know it yet.

hey DZ girl, i know what you are saying. he has started going outside but he still has at least one or two accidents a day and still will pee in his crate. honestly i don't really mind overall because he is an extremely calm tempered puppy which is amazing to me. usually puppy's are so wound up and bark and want to jump around all the time. he is pretty laid back.

You can get pads to put on the floor to train your dog.

My ex-aunt had a teacup poodle and when he was still a puppy she would lay a pad down so if they weren't home the dog would pee on the pad. You could put one in a section of the crate so he doesn't pee on him self, or you could leave him out of the crate and put one in the kitchen and train him to sue it when he can't go outside.

Oooh I want a pug. I can't currently have one because they aren't allowed in my apt complex, but I think they are the cutest things ever. Is it sad that one of my goals in life is to own a dog because I never had one as a kid growing up? (My mom is VERY allergic so it wasn't even a option to have anything with fur.)

ISUKappa 05-20-2004 10:53 PM

Don't feel bad about crating him! It's actually much safer/healthier for them and they really don't mind. It's comforting for them as dogs are den animals. As with any training, it will take some getting used to, but you're honestly not hurting him when you crate him. Make sure he sees it as a safe place and never use it as a punishment. Lure him in with treats and praise him constantly. Treats and positive reinforcement also work well with housetraining.
