Construction costs will vary greatly by location (materials/ labor). Perhaps in Kansas, one can build a 10,000 sq ft house for $150,000 where the same house would cost 10x as much elsewhere. Yes, it seems like a low figure to me, but since he's actually doing it, he should know what his budget is.

Thumbs up

Got these figures from Contractors who are Brothers!

They do know their stuff, now remember, We own the land and that helps!

Got the info from The Lehigh Web Site for the info as of This AM!

Still trying to figure out if they are going to force ALL Greeks to live there or what they are going to do! Some Greeks Have Nice Looking Houses, but are they liveable?

Lehigh has made a commitment to Progressing With The Greek Organizations as they feel it would be better to work with them! It could also mean that they want to work with The Greek Alums, $$$ Donatores??

They are building a Greek Complex area for the Greeks. Of course, this could be a better way to control Greeks? Time will tell the tale!

square footage costs

figure $150 per sq. ft. Might vary, upwards to two million bucks
for sizeable lot. Five million will build you a nice house. Then you
must pay for it. Cheapest imaginable is a million bucks...WOW!
We built Teke house at KU in '64 for $600 K, 88 man house, too.
As a former mortgage banker and TKE volunteer forty years, I do
think it would be a helleva good investment. No booze in the house. Probably a housemother. Depends, again, on customs and area...Payoff 15 years or so...no prepayment penalty...
Frugal tip...build in sections, adding additional room/quarters. Do
the dining area so as to make for a chapter room also. It might
be unreasonable in these days to exceed a sixty man house, as
some will want their own stereos, boom boxes, TVs, other trappings which we did not have 'way back when. The sleeping
porch seems to be passé. too. Scroll numbers for room choice.
Nice to have one guest room, well-furnished and SACRED!
Do not skimp on what you build and allow room for expansion.

The rooms are poured concrete/steel frame. It's probably saved the house from burning down. I remember one of their alums who sits on our housing corp telling us about a fire they had in one of those rooms that totally gutted that room -- destroyed everything. The rooms adjacent, however, were untouched.

Slap a coat of paint on it every few years and it's good to go.
You're right about that... it is built like a brick sh*thouse!

Is this what you are talking about? http://bw.lehigh.edu/story.asp?ID=17572

Where does it say they are building new houses? They already have houses. It sounds like they are just forming anti-greek task force to take control of the existing houses. I'll bet half the fraternities will be evicted in the next 5 years.
