Well, see, the British students *do* wear university sweatshirts and t-shirts around town. I guess it's just that my professor was trying to imply that I was being a "typical gung-ho American" for buying mine so quickly.
Whatever. I set her straight!

UF sent me a little Albert patch/sticker in my admissions letter, but no tshirt. In fact, I didn't get or buy any UF gear until winter of my sophmore year when I bought a sweatshirt to wear to a conference.
BYU, while recruiting me, sent me a tshirt, a baseball cap, and a planner. I think they were trying to bribe me into finishing my application, which no amount of free stuff or money would have gotten me to do.

The benefits of having a British mother...you learn the slang/other names for things pretty quickly.

I thought a "jumper" in British English referred to a sweater, not a sweatshirt.

No, they didn't give me a free sweatshirt. That is why they can charge 50 bucks for them at the bookstore!
I got a few free t-shirts BEFORE I was accepted. (like at those stupid recruiting weekends where they invite you there and you stay in the dorm with people, etc.) I am sure it is just a perk to lure you there.

I didn't get a t-shirt when I was accepted to undergrad, but I did get a little sticker with the letter. My daddy put it on his car.
When I got in to grad school, I had to put down a $500 deposit. Still, no T-shirt. Just a lot of abuse and boredom.

Indiana didn't send me a free T-shirt or sweatshirt or anything like that. They did send me a car decal though.

We got an UGLY t-shirt at orientation, but it was in the cost of the orientation. I think I wore mine to clean house in, cause it was an XL and really ugly. Hmm, I probably still have it in a box at my moms with the zillions of t-shirts we got my senior year of high school.

I got a lanyard....whooo hoooo
Now, if you're accepted into the School of Education you get a nifty t-shirt...of course it's XL and ugly...and once you add it all up it costs over $10,000 for a damn shirt...
