University Sweatshirts Question
I head something new recently:
Do American universities **really** send out a free university sweatshirt to everyone who gets a place and accepts at that university? Apparently, American (USA) universities/colleges send out sweatshirts to the person when someone gets admitted to that school (e.g. "NYU" or "Santa Barbara" sweatshirts etc). Is this true? Can people, clarify? Thanks! :D |

I went to a State school with an entering class of about 7,000 and all I got was a letter saying, "Dear Sandy, we are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted into the Fall 1997 Freshman Class, now give us your freaking $100 intent to enroll fee." |
Yep, that's similar to what I got. Intent to enrol fee though - I just got that sort of letter with the pay your tuition fees of x now right now scourge of humanity thing - same?
The sweatshirt thing I heard about in an LJ community, wasn't easy to see whether it was genuine/sarcasm/representative of majority of US colleges. (http://www.livejournal.com/community/ukuni/) The Hawaiian university you went to is pretty much the same sweatshirts-wise as mine then OohTeenyWahine. :) Anyone else heard of this? Or gets a sweatshirt? |

I remember also being accepted to Hawai`i Pacific University (private and independent school) and in my acceptance envelope I received one of those "t-shirt bricks". It was a t-shirt that said HPU in the shape of a brick. The t-shirt was of low quality and I ended up using it as a rag. |
Elon sends everyone a shirt when they pay their deposit. It's usually a size XL, though, so I could never wear mine
|
OohTeenyWahine ok sorry I didn't know that. I just used that phrasing maybe lazily as I knew vaguely you lived in Hawaii and had went to a university also there without bothering to check specifics of where exactly from past posts/profile etc.

I've never heard of any schools doing this. It would cost too much money to give a free sweatshirt out to everyone you accepted, even the people who didn't end up coming to your school.

I don't think this is standard practice...I got a free shirt when I toured Marquette as a incoming frosh but it was with an engineering program. Bradley gave me a free shirt when I toured too, but that was an Honors Program tour. Platteville gave us a free shirt at orientation that was awful and I think I wore mine twice, then gave it to my dad.

Nope, not for Iowa State. However, I did receive a brochure from our University Book Store, promoting our sweatshirts that were available for $40 or something.
|
My undergraduate university has 33,000 students - that's just way too many sweatshirts. So, no, they did not give out sweatshirts to everyone who received an offer.
Richard, it's kind of off the topic a bit, but my professor at Bristol made fun of me in front of the entire class for buying a university sweatshirt the first month of classes. I had to explain to her that it is a tradition among American students to run off and get one at their first opportunity. <sigh> Luckily some of the Brits backed me up on that. .....Kelly :) Edited because I used a British term that most people on GC would find weird. Sorry! |
When I was accepted to a private college in Pennsylvania, they sent me a poster. They didn't give me a scholarship, but they gave me a poster. I never heard of free sweatshirts.
|
I got a poster from UK, but then again I think it was from the Honors Program, not from UK itself. Heidelberg sent me a calendar/poster, too. UK has too many undergrads to afford to send them all a sweatshirt. Besides, why send them one when you can pretty much guarantee they'll buy one from the bookstore for $50?
navane -- That's why I'm not buying my U. of Heidelberg Tshirt until right before I leave, I dont want to get made fun of! No one wears them here, but I'll wear it back home. I've seen other exchange students wearing them, though, and the German students always laugh at them. |
I applied to nothing but private universities here in Texas, about 8 of 'em, so I can't speak of public universities in TX. Of the schools I applied to, only 1 sent me a shirt: the University of Dallas. I think one sent me a cap, but I don't remember which school it was.
|
my sister and i went to the same school. when she got accepted they sent her a car decal. when i got accepted, i got nothing. i guess they realized the costs were adding up.
|
I got an orientation t-shirt. But it was not free. It was part of the cost of the orientation fee. I also got a welcome note from the bookstore and it gave me the $45 Russel Athletic sweatshirt and the $15 Games Hat.
