I think Baylor has this right. I also think that Notre Dame has the right to high academic standards/requirements as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they are a private university because they are a Catholic school and thus would get no state funding. Therefore, they should be able to have whatever high academic standards they damn well please. I'll get off my soap box now.

I believe that when you apply to a private school and give them your money, you are agreeing to abide by "codes of conduct" or whatever the particular school calls it. Private schools have the right to set whatever they want, and aren't funded by the state, so they can pretty much do whatever they want.
I went to a private university that had a curfew. People would complain about the curfew all the time, and I would be like, "You knew it when you signed up..."

When I was a student and received my student loan, I had to sign a paper stating that I wouldn't use illegal drugs. Do you still have to do this?

Why would they be likely to lose their 501(c)(3) status?

Kind of odd . . . smoking pot can lose you access to student loans forever . . hacking your mama into 15 pieces won't . . . or is it any felony?

Any private university is just that ....private. That don't have to adhere to state admission they set their own set of rules and policies and that being honor codes, standard of living and ehat not.

BYU ....Morman/LDS ( however they are referred too) they set a high standard....caught living with opp sex your out of there... so they can essentially take away scholarships and what not for not following there institutions guidelines of conduct....gay straight living wiht opp sex drugs alcohol.

Just remember Scholarships are created by foundations, families, students, etc..... so those essentially can be dictated however they feel they want to run scholarships. Federal govt i truly believe gives private univ some latittude in this area .

She says who cares because it's Baylor. I mean, no one really cares what goes on at Baylor, other than the Baptists.

Private means just that, private institutions can do whatever they please. Upon enrollment, you are aware, or you should be, of the attitudes of that institution. You won't see my African behind applying to Bob Jones.

Do they receive government research grants? Tax breaks?

Do those make a difference? Should they?

There are some very wrong statements being made about private universities here. I'm not even going to try and address that.

However, as some of the above posters have stated, scholarships come from all over and can have requirements on them. I lose my scholarship if I don't keep a certain GPA and don't meet other standards that I don't feel I need to discuss here. This scholarship is not being publicly funded, and it can have whatever standards it wants to. You agree to the standards of your scholarships/grants/whatever when you sign your financial aid offer. This guy knew what he was getting into when he went to Baylor.

Exactly. I don't give a rat's ass what a Baptist college does, even if it considers itself the Yale of Texas.
