Chip, Jono and I talked about this last night. I bought one from yardsale and is not much to brag about. They also had a STG badge and from the picture it looked rough also.
I also wondered if they were just stamping them out.
I think the starting price is about the same as Hdq. sells them for.

The ones you can buy from IHQ today are made by Masters of Design.
The ones 127yardsale has on ebay were made by J.O. Pollack.

I'm guessing that this guy got some that were leftovers when the switch was made to Masters of Design. BTW, rumor has it that Masters of Design will be attending General Assembly as a featured vendor.

Jono, do your thing on them.
It seems with the crap that they seem to be putting out, they have balls showing up. With what you had to go through on the guard for Mouse, I am sure they know who you are.
Maybe if enough people complain New designator can be appointed.
Just wonder if when they show their wares and others show what has come from other Makers it will influence them?
Will be quite interesting to find out.

I have a comparison of badges (including 3 different economy, or plain, badges from Pollack, BPA, and M.O.D.) on our alumni website. Take a look.
http://alumni.bnzeta.org/history/index.htm
BTW, 127yardsale is listing a variety of pins and hats from all kinds of GLOs, not just Lambda Chi. No idea where he got them.

Hey Jono,
Well done page on the badge variations. But where is your 1915 Hoover & Smith badge? The third one down looks like it - the one you've got it labeled as "Crown set pearls and curved (convex) lambda with beveled monogram underneath. Probably Balfour, pre-1925."
Best Regards,

Thanks! Brother Hartman has his very own page under Brother Biographies - it's listed right beneath the Variations. For some reason I can't bookmark specific pages or I would paste the link here.
That's the ONE badge I did not risk taking to Pinfest!

Hope you have been well. BTW, no one I've ever asked knows about the number of stars on the DPhi. Ever figure it out?

That's awesome. Makes me miss the little guy.
I tried for about 2 years to dig up info on Mr. Hartmann. Had I succeeded to the extent you have, it would have taken a lot more than the DPhi!
The stars thing is still a mystery. During the turmoil of the 70s, they lost a great deal of their knowledge about esoteric history, so even the DPhis don't know. I think my assumption about what they represent is correct, but this "rule" was probably not consistently part of every chapter's esoteric instruction.
As a result, it was probably left to the jeweler and the undergrads to work it out, maybe copying the designs of older alums, maybe choosing the number at random.
I'm going with a semi-educated guess of 1854 for the badge, but of course that's based on the most optimistic interpretation. Construction alone would have made me guess 1870s.
Anyway, it's a great piece.

If it's any help, I miss the Delta Phi too. The blued steel pin on the back is special if not unique. Unfortunate that it wasn't inscribed, is all. It's old. I kinda wish I still had it, but I also love the LCA badge you traded me.
I've thought about this for a long time and if ya can't decide, then it must have been an even trade.
I think it was.
....and everyone else is wondering what the hell we're talking about here. Sorry 'bout that.
Ironically, the existance of Delta Phi is why (at U. Penn) our badge was changed to Delta Pi.
