I enjoyed the movie as well. Though I grew up hearing about this struggle, it was thought-provoking to watch how this mass action unfolded on the day-to-day level, especially seeing how people were being ticketed for nothing, having to walk in all kinds of weather, disagreeing about strategy and having to work around leaders' egos, etc. I loved seeing how a group of black folk were able to overcome the very HUMAN (not exclusively black) tendency to compete/complain against one another to accomplish a goal, in a very underground sort of way.
The movie got my husband and I talking about other examples of our people's use of the underground/word of mouth to get things done: secret societies of Africa, exchanging knowledge on a plane "others" couldn't comprehend; griots handing down generations of history through the spoken word; drums/songs beating out messages to slaves on different plantations; raisin' up outta bondage on the dl; Pullman Porters distributing the Chicago Defender to folks in the deep South, much to the chagrin of southern whites--and I could go on and on...
