I just wanted to say that I watched Steel Magnolias during Easter Weekend and I just wanted to see the part where they show the composite. So I record it, stop and rewind and keep looking at the composite. So obvious it is a composite but I couldn't read anything on it for the life of me.
Now I just need to rent the movie so I can watch the funeral scene and pay close attention to Claree.

It's very brief, and I was possibly wanting to see it, but I really think that Claree is wearing one, albeit on her lapel.

I am sorry to crash but i am a big steel magnolias freak........i have seen that movie at least 35 times and cry every time...... another Phi Mu symbol.... the funeral scene .... the casket was adorned with sprays of pink carnations. Pink dress she wore when she was leaving for the honeymoon. It is hard to make out the composite. The big pink flower hanging up next to it. I think it is right that claree was wearing the badge.
that movie was all about blush and bashful=PINK!

Bless you!!! I've been thinking that I was hallucinating!! I've been seeing my mother through some post-surgerical problems, and I keep forgetting to bring my copy of Steel Magnolias to her house with me!

Okay it was just on last night on lifetime and the more I watched Claree the more it looked like what she might be wearing was a pin with a guard.
It really looked like it could have been a Phi Mu badge.
Curious, does anyone know if the actress who plays Claree, Olympia Dukakis, is a Phi Mu? If she is maybe she wore the pin for a reason. If she's not, pick her up for AI (same goes for Julia Roberts and all the other women in the cast if their not already greek).

So I am watching the movie now, but yesterday I watched the special features and one of them was titled "remembering steel magnolias" (something to that effect). The author spoke a lot about how he wanted to get something in writing of his sister and how he wanted his nephew to know how wonderful she was.
Anyways, he mentioned that all the doctors we see at the end of the movie who are helping shelby, they were his sister, susan's, real doctors and nurses. He also mentioned that his mom (who was so excited that sally field would be playing her) really wanted to watch the scene, even though he was worried how she would react to it. He said he thought she just wanted to see Julia get up, since Susan never did. Breaks your heart.

I watched Steel Magnolias twice this weekend and each time you see Claree in the funeral scenes i have looked very carefully and i swear it looks like a Phi mu badge. you can see it is not a definite round circle so its got to be a badge.
Also i looked at the bedroom scene were she is getting ready to leave on her honeymoon and the composite could be a phi mu composite because if you look closely at the crest in the middle it looks like yours.

Okay, I hate to rain on the parade, but I'm fairly certain that I was wrong. The pin on Claree in the funeral scene looks more like a diamond-encrusted bow, instead of a Phi Mu pin.
And I so wanted it to be one!!

Um, it is a Phi Mu composite seeing as though she IS a Phi Mu.
Honeychile... it was on today and I could have sworn it was a Phi Mu badge with a dangle. You could kinda see the chain hanging down. I wish we could find out for sure!

I too watched it again today, actually with my grandfather. I explained to him that it is based on a true story. I even told him that she was in a sister sorority. I even went on to explain that we were founded at the same school and that some of our founders were friends with each other, the whole shebang. LOL.
But when the funeral scene came on, I just could not tell what Claree was wearing on her lapel. But it does resemble a badge.

I'm thinking we need it on VHS, so you can slo-mo the scene. It's definitely either the bow or a Phi Mu pin & guard, though. Are Phi Mus allowed to wear their pin on a closed suit lapel?
