I'm sorry that we won't be rushing *together* but I applaud you for making a hard decision. You're definitely in my thoughts!

Two questions:
How would you girls that are already in a sorority handle a girl who goes through informal rush during her last semester?? I dont know- maybe this should be out of the question for me come January.
I know this might sound stupid- but you have to do alumni initiation after you already graduated right? I am asking because I know that actives can go alumna during their senior year- but my situation is different. If informal rush doesnt work out for me- whether I rush or not- am I eligible for alumni initiation if I havent ever been through a rush process in college?

I could be wrong, but I think some sororities require at least one active semester?
I definately agree with the others who have applauded you for making such a hard decision. Like everyone else has said, studies are definately more important b/c that's why we're in school in the first place! I definately hope things work out for you and that you find a home whether it be now while you're in college or through A.I.

in terms of ai, you definately can't be a current student in a typical program when you apply. differnt groups have different rules...some may require a min of 1 year of college, some may say you never had to go, some may say you should be out of college for 4 years before you can be considered, so you definately have to look group by group. i think if you are a non-traditional student, some groups may still consider you for ai, but it sounds like you are 21/22 and a senior in college.
it really depends on the groups on your campus. some may be willing to give you a chance even tho you only have one semester. others may not. definately speak to your friends in glos on your campus and see how they feel. if they tell you that it might not be a good idea or that no of the groups would even give you a chance, then don't be upset. finish off the semester and look into ai.

my organization has had that happen a few times in the past. where girls pledge their last semester and it wasn't a problem at ALL. the girls ended up being very active alumni and were still able to enjoy some time as a sorority member. i say if it's something you really want - go for it in the spring

I went through informal recruitment for the second time as a last semester senior. It's a long story, but I had been to recruitment before and gotten a bid. Unfortunately my mom died and I had to decline my bid. So, after a couple years, I decided to give it one last go with one of the sororities on campus.
I'm sorry to report that I did not receive a bid. The officers who took me aside specifically stated that they liked me but didn't want to give me a bid because I was in my last semester. They said they would feel bad for me having to pay so much money only to be active for a few weeks.

After not being able to join a sorority, I inquired of that same national group. The national alumnae coordinator advised me that, in order to qualify for alumnae initiation, I would have to be ineligible to join a collegiate group. Since I was still in college, that mean that, techncally, I could still join a sorority. So, she said that she would send me some material in the mail to read. Then, after I graduated in a few month's time, I should contact the local alum association.

1. It depends on your school. I'd ask around and try to get a feel for your college.
2. Yes, you have to graduate in most cases. Check out the Alumni forum for LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of information on alumna initiation. There's a whole thread that lists the requirements of each sorority.

I have good news!
No- I am not rushing this fall- havent changed my mind about that BUT I did decide to rush in the spring for informal rush. I was a little dissapointed because I didnt think I stood a chance rushing the same semester that I will be graduating, but.....last night I talked to the president of a sorority here at UH. I had talked to her before she became president, and she made me feel really comfortable and was going out of her way to help me meet the girls. Anyway- i explained my situation to her and this is what she said:
She said I should rush right now in the fall just to experience more and be with the sisters more- but she understands and is proud of my decision. Seniors rushing that will be graduating that same semester is something that she says has happened, and they have gotten bids because the greek life at our school is not big, and they encourage girls to rush no matter what classification they are! She did say that the first semester is really expensive and I wont get too much experience but I should definitely go for it if it is something that I really want. Recommendations are still needed for rush- so getting my personal recs would be awesome. She gave me her email address and said to email her whenever i want to either meet the girls or just have a question. She also said she would give me the events they have to meet them and hang out, or the parties that they guys will be throwing so I could attend. I told her I would definitely email her atleast by January to find out the rush events. Since it will be informal rush- they will just be having activities where the prospective girls can attend. In a way- I am kind of leaning towards her sorority because she is really the only active member of a sorority at UH that has been that informative and expressing such a big interest in me!! I am not going to be biased though- and will try to attend atleast one of every sorority activity that participates in informal rush. I heard that most sororities do participate in informal rush since filling quota here is tough due to not being a big interest in greek life. OH- and she said her sorority requires to initiate their new members after 7-8 weeks of pledging- so I would already be initiated before graduating. If this all works out- I do plan on being an active alumnae!
I had to go to school today to buy some books for the fall and I did some wandering to look for the greek row they are building. I saw Bayou Oaks I think it was- I dont know if that is where they are going to be but those look like apartments. If they are those, I am wondering if it is only for sororities and fraternities because they look big. I also got to see the Sigma Nu house which is basically in front of Bayou Oaks.
Well- I was very happy to hear that there is still hope for me!! If this was the end for me, I would definitely look for A.I., but I want some type of collegiate experience, even if it is for only a semester!
Hopefully I will be able to start my REAL rush thread in January!!

I talked to the rush chair for another sorority this morning on the phone. She was nice- but basically said that that is not something she has heard of- seniors rushing that will be graduating that semester getting a bid. Therefore- i find it weird that I am hearing two different things. She said she doesnt know 100% but that is just something she has never seen. I will see if I can contact the other sororities and see what they say. I might just not attend this girl's sorority events in the spring if she said they dont do that
I dont know- I'll keep trying and i'll post the information
As of now:
Sorority A: yes
Sorority B: no

Well, you probably heard conflicting reports because it varies from chapter to chapter. It seems that sorority A has probably done it in the past and/or is open to it, while sorority B is not. Know what that means? One less house for you to go to for Spring!
I know we should all keep open minds, but you are. It's not so different from a low grade issue. Just because one won't make and exception to a lower than standard grade point, it doesn't mean they are all like that. And in the end, it will be for the best. Good luck and keep us posted!
