'Will & Grace' actress Morrison charged
Wednesday, April 30, 2003 Posted: 9:46 AM EDT (1346 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Actress Shelley Morrison, who plays the tart-tongued maid on NBC comedy "Will & Grace," was charged with misdemeanor theft Tuesday in connection with her shoplifting arrest last week.

Morrison, 66, was taken into custody on April 23 at a Robinsons-May department store in Los Angeles after security officers at the store allegedly caught her trying to steal costume jewelry valued at $446, authorities said.

She was released after posting $20,000 bail. An arraignment is set for May 14.

The Los Angeles City Attorney's Office lodged a misdemeanor against Morrison after the L.A. County District Attorney's Office declined to bring a felony charge, noting the value of merchandise in question was just over the $400 cutoff for a felony and that the actress had no prior criminal record.

Alleged theft amounts are "generally upwards to $1,000 before we start considering felony prosecution," District Attorney spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons said.

Morrison's lawyer, Donald Etra, told Reuters his client was "relieved and gratified that she is not being charged with a felony." He added: "At this point, she stands innocent."

"Until she receives formal notice of the charges, and the evidence behind them at the arraignment, she cannot comment further," Etra said. "Ms. Morrison does stand on her impeccable record as a wonderful actress and humanitarian."

An NBC spokeswoman declined to comment, other than to say the case would have no effect on "Will & Grace," which already has wrapped production on its fifth season.

The misdemeanor theft charge carries a maximum penalty of a year in the county jail, while a felony count is punishable by up to a year in state prison, City Attorney spokesman Frank Mateljan said.

Morrison's arrest comes 16 months after another actress, Winona Ryder, was caught stealing more than $5,560 in goods from the Saks Fifth Avenue store in Beverly Hills. Ryder was ultimately sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to complete 480 hours of community service.

Morrison, who was born in New York City's the Bronx and is married to writer Walter Dominguez, has appeared in dozens of movies and television shows during her four decades in show business.

Her credits include playing a nun opposite Sally Field in the 1960s hit show "The Flying Nun" as well as roles on the soap opera "General Hospital" and the 1997 feature "Fools Rush In." She is best known to current TV audiences as the wise-cracking maid Rosario Salazar on the Emmy Award-winning sitcom "Will & Grace."
