please don't overlook the fact that saddam is a wacko and just think it's all for a re-election. that's completely an insane way to go about getting the office again, and i doubt ANYone would do that. if ppl would just hear him out and know what's going on over there, i think more ppl would support the effort....maybe. i dunno......

Well with 70-76% of the people supporting the war effort and the Bush diplomatic policy I don't think they can gain much more ground. There are people out there (eg. whoever posted the "Why I will never support Bush" thread) who won't support anything he does. They have their own agenda. They are STILL bitter about the election.

Don't worry, there won't even be a question who wins next time.

Hopefully we can avoid such a contraversy next time.

People in Florida should just learn how to vote.
"People in Florida should just learn how to vote"? Have you ever tried to vote with outdated machines, in precincts that can't afford the same equipment that your precinct surely has in order for you to make such a comment? The poor are being disenfranchised simply because they do not live in precincts that have high-tech computer voting machines. It is NOT and NEVER WAS an issue of people not knowing how to vote. I'm from Florida, and even though my precinct has nice and simple voting machines, I have volunteered in other precincts that are not that priveleged. People should be able to vote with simplicity and ease--regardless of their economic status and where they might live. Please think about that before you make another comment like that. And maybe you should learn how to spell.

Munchkin03,

Oh, PULEEESE! You're trying to tell us that everyone needs high-tech machines to be able to vote?!? The people I know who vote have never had problems with any of the types of voting machines. I've used the lever type, the card-and-stylus type, and high-tech, too. There are always volunteers willing to explain the voting procedures to anyone in need.

I'm going to stop my comments right there because I don't want to get blasted any more than I will be.

MSKKG, you are right.

As a Floridian who used an "outdated" machine to cast my vote in the 2000 election, I can tell you it was not difficult. It was the first time I had ever voted too, as I missed the age cutoff by two weeks for the 1996 election.

At some point, you have to accept responsibility for your vote. If you are confused on what to do, ask a poll worker. After all, that is what poll workers are there for anyway.

Just my .02.

Things would be different with Gore. Things were different with Pres. Cinton. I'm not really sure in what ways things would be different though. I need to think about that.

Well, I certainly didn't say that they were needed. I do understand that there are always volunteers--if you had read my post correctly, I mention that I have volunteered. There are simply a lot of problems that can arise with these old outdated lever machines. Does it seem right to you that one precinct can have nicer machines than an other--in a FEDERAL, not a LOCAL election? Call me a pinko lefty, but I think that the only way to prevent a debacle like this is to equalize voting procedures.

Munchkin03, I inferred from your comments that you thought the high-tech machines were needed. You might not have used those words, but "disenfranchised" and "not that privileged" connotate something missing. Like I said in my post, I've used many types of machines--they all seemed pretty simple to me.

I agree with Cluey that people have to accept responsibility for their votes. I guess voting is kind of like having babies--people don't have to prove their competence or intelligence to do either.

I live in Oklahoma. In a state of only 3 million folks there is a $687 million shortfall in revenue. We're one of the lowest educated states in the country... Somehow we've had a great voting system for YEARS now.. Optical.

In my TV news job I usually get election/hard news beats. Speaking with workers at the elections while getting footage one day I found out our voting system is around 25 years old! So old we can no longer get parts for it and may have to transition to more expensive equipment.

Saying that these counties "can't afford" the equipment is laughable. Dade and Broward (sp?) counties from what information I was able to pick up looked very much more affluent than my Oklahoman counties that were actually consulted by ya'll on how best to do things.

"I voted for number 2!!!" Next time read the name next to the hole you punch.
