Would things be different with Gore....
Ok since Bush's address to us declaring a 48 hours for Saddam to leave I wonder. Do you think things would be different if Gore were in office? I think in other posts I have made my own opinions of our president clear. I don't want any "hippie bullcrap" here and no "Bush is great". I would like to spark some real debate, with real facts not opinions. What do you all think would we still be looking at War?
|
I think the 9/11 actions took would be similar. On Iraq I think we would still be doing inspections and trying to gather more intellenece for proof. I also think we would be more focused on North Korea with its nukes.
|
I can't say for sure what would be going on war-wise if our President was Al Gore. What I'm really curious about, though, is if the ultra-liberal showbiz folks (Streisand, Sheen, et al) would support his decision one way or another.
|
I suspect things would be different with Gore, but am willing to admit that the government knows things that I don't.
On the other hand, I don't understand Bush's sort of "tunnel visioned" desire to rush into this conflict. In the end, he may be perfectly justified, but I haven't seen the proof yet. I'm not a "dove," but having lived through that little conflict in Southeast Asia a few years ago, I would like to be absolutely sure any war is necessary. |
gore would be lollygaggin around and do nothing, then wed pay for it later on when hes out of office, then hed say he did everything we could, kinda like his old boss did to us....
|
The only "real fact" is that Gore is not President. Everything else is just speculation and opinion.

i'm a democrat
and i didn't vote for gore i didn't think he had the guts to back anything he said you pick and choose your battles you pick and choose your leaders i think the one we have right now is doing fine i just hope that someone's not planning on killing himb because i don't know if i could handle dick cheney. . . |
I think that if Al Gore was President that war with Iraq would not be even a discussion at this point. I speculate that he would have focused more on the homefront, and trying to revive the economy back to levels we saw in the mid-90's. I honestly believe that this war with Iraq was not inevitable, but came about through the will of solely this administration, and had Gore been elected there would be no talk of war. This is NOT to say that the theoretical Gore administration was not doing what they could to keep US citizens safe (which is what Chopper seemed to be saying...at least that's what I got out of it).
I also think that had discussion of war arose, Gore would not have pushed nearly as hard as Bush has, unless there really is somethign that the Government is keeping from us...There would be no Gore Doctrine saying we as a Nation have the right to pre-emptively attack any other nation. Really there is so much that would likely be vastly different (despite what seemed like similar candidates in 2000) that it is really hard to say what would have happened and where we would be today. |
it's hard to answer all this with facts as you requested b/c it's a speculative question......i don't think we would be at war right now, either, though if gore was prez.....i think he would wait for the smoking gun (something else to happen on our soil), and the thought of something like 9/11 ever happening again makes me sick to my stomach. i think we are in good hands....i think there's a lot we don't know, a lot of evidence bush has for going ahead with all this "shock and awe", etc....and i don't think the general public has to or needs to know everything our government knows....who knows what could blow security? but, yeah....i think things would be different if gore was the man right now......we may not be looking at war as we are now, but we would be eventually.....when we got attacked again.

I think Iraq would be a major world issue, but we would not have jumped into as agressive as a campaign as we did under Bush--simply because of Bush's cabinet. There are a lot of people there who were instrumental in Gulf War I--Rice, Powell, Cheney, etc. That's not saying that those people are hawks, they probably consider what's happening there a lot more urgent than another administration might.
I believe Gore would have focused, after 9/11, on domestic issues--protecting the environment, improving the dog-eared economy, maybe providing more, better, health care to the majority of Americans. That is not to say that that is better or worse than what is happening now--just different. |
If Gore were in office we probably would have deployed troops but not provided them with our full arsenal of military capabilities. Yeah I am looking at you Clinton!!!

This is ALL speculation, but I don't think war would be a pressing issue if Gore were in office. I think this was a top priority of the Bushes since Daddy Bush was in office. This is Dubya..."you messed with my Daddy, I'm going to get you..."
Bill didn't have war on his agenda. He had other things MORE PRESSING on his mind. :o I also see it as a way of getting the country to support Dubya. His approval rating seemed to wane, but as soon as the idea of war AND before that, 9/11 his approval went up the roof. To "guarantee" a victory for the next election....DECLARE WAR. (wtfe) :( |
Something of note is that it has never wanted below a level that he'd need for to be reelected (W's approval).
The question has always been, how much would he win by? Hopefully we can avoid such a contraversy next time. People in Florida should just learn how to vote. |

i think baby bush is def. wanting revenge for what saddam did during papa bush's time....but it's about settling what's right for the american ppl who were wronged, more so than for his dad. that's taking a huge world issue and putting it into just a tiny space. ya know?
and bill with "more pressing" things on his mind...lol...yeah, like ms. lewinsky! haha! please don't overlook the fact that saddam is a wacko and just think it's all for a re-election. that's completely an insane way to go about getting the office again, and i doubt ANYone would do that. if ppl would just hear him out and know what's going on over there, i think more ppl would support the effort....maybe. i dunno...... monica |
