Meheron,

Studies have shown that one of the key reasons that women join alumnae chapters is because they have moved to a new area. They are in a strange place and usually don't have many local friends, so they want to meet people. The newcomers usually seek out their sorority's local alumnae chapter because they know that they will have at least one thing in common (the sorority) with the other members when they show up for their first meeting. It's a comfort thing.

That being said, one of the reasons that you had few Muncie women attending the meeting is probably because those "local" ladies already have established connections in the area. They have their own social groups already, so they don't have a "need" to make new friends like the new arrivals do. It will take more effort on your part to convince the locals that they should join your group.

Good luck with your new alumnae chapter! I wish y'all the best!

A few things to also consider:

Make a free website for the alumnae chapter on Geocities (or whatever). Keep it updated! That way, women new to the area can find out that you do exist!

Make a mailing list for local alumnae on Yahoo Groups. I did this for my chapter's alumnae and it's great, because we can always get updates on what the chapter is doing.

A local alumnae association that I used to go to (before grad school!) has a similar list, not discussion, but announcing events such as philanthropy, founder's day, pool party, etc. I know that if I ever want to go, I'm welcome!

To keep it growing, give the website and alum list info to graduating seniors, and try to get them to sign up ASAP! That way they can stay informed and in touch.

Don't give up hope!
