We just put the icicle lights up today. We're expecting snow here tomorrow.

valkyrie, I'm going to have to disagree with you about the monochromatic look. I saw a house today on my way home that was all done in red lights (red candles in the windows and red lights on the outside) and it looked positively demonic.

No snow here, but plenty of icicle lights. I was conversing with a GC friend about the nets-I too think they have a stilted look. I like to cover a tree with accent on three branches then come from behind with lights that twinkle. I was looking for a short cut this year, but there just aren't any. I usually don't like to see a mix of color and white, but I must say our NEW neighbors have mixed "pearl" with very soft colors and it is really pretty. I hate those refrigerator bulbs on the strands, but if you get fog, I have to admit, at least they show up. Lots of people go the professional route. I'd rather do it myself and have people ask-"Who did your lights/mantle/candelabra?"

I love icicle lights. People do use them around here, but I haven't seen any yet this year.

My neighbor just put out his net lights on the hedges in front of his house - they look very nice, and he tells me they didn't take long at all to do. (A good thing when you're in the middle of a cold snap )

If you think one or two houses on your block go nuts on the Christmas decorations - there's an entire street near my in-laws' house that goes totally overboard. If these guys didn't exist, the local power company would be broke. We're talking lighted nativity scenes, animated deer and moose, toy soldiers, Santa and reindeer strung from the roof to a tree, customized lighted signs, you name it. People come from miles around to see it.

I put a few lights in my windows and I'm done

I'm not a huge fan of how the net lights look, actually. But I've never done lights before, and I figure it'll be a quick fix - just get *something* up

We don't usually decorate until later in December. Good Catholics that we are, we keep up our stuff until Kings' Day (Jan 6) So we wait a little bit so we're not as sick of seeing all of it as those who have been decked out since before Thanksgiving

I figure after my finals I'll put some lights out, just for the hell of it So it'll never win a contest. It'll be shiny and pretty
