Question about Christmas lights
 

Totally random, I apologize!

Here in the south where we don't get any snow what-so-ever, almost everybody puts icicle lights on their homes. For you northerners who do get snow, do you all put icicle lights on your home, or regular lights? What is the norm?

I personally don't put up lights on my house but I've seen both types of lights used. I think most people just use the regular lights.

When I am in Nebraska...I've noticed that at least in my neighborhood anyway, people put up regular strings of lights....most people in my neighborhood there get them professionally done though, so they always look beautiful! :D

Here at school we have icicle lights on our house, along with several other Greek houses and a lot of random houses around campus. I don't think it necessarily matters, but these are just what I've noticed. :D

In Georgia, icicle lights seems to be the thing and lately I'm seeing more of them in rainbow colors. My kids are embarrassed because we have the regular lights but I got over their embarrassment about us a long time ago!

Down here, icicle lights are all the rage, and have been for a few years. Personally, I can't stand them. I'm OCD when it comes to Christmas lights - they drive me crazy if they're not absolutely straight (as in, using a nail gun to get them up, not those wussy roof clips ;) )and the icicle lights never look straight. In fact, I think people use them because they can be sloppy with them and not have to worry about them being totally straight.

We've never put lights out on our house, because we never had outdoor electrical outlets. We do in our new house, so after finals are over, I'm going to get some of those "net" lights and do the bushes :)

Ugh, I hate rainbow colored icicle lights!!! It looks so tacky! Icicles are supposed to be white. :mad: I also can't stand blinking lights, so the blinking rainbow icicle lights are the worst!

I like most other Christmas lights, as long as they're done tastefully. There's a house near me that puts all of this crap on their lawn at Christmas and it's so horrendous looking. They have wooden cut-outs of pretty much all of the Disney and Looney Toons characters, and big moving dolls, and about 10 million lights (think National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation). They also have a 15-foot tall snowman that sits on their lawn all year long because they can't take it apart and there's nowhere else for them to store it. :rolleyes:

I think most people buy whatever is in the stores... It's not about being fashionable really... Or at least here it is not. Icecicles are in plentiful supply in stores so that's what we have.

They are really popular in my hometown in Kansas City.

I dislike the fact that they people hang them on straight sections of their house. I think they look way cooler if people hang them on the eaves and were their roofs come to points. My home would look awesome b/c we have a really uneven roof with lots of steep slopes and stuff.

Flashing lights are the WORST!!! I can't stand them, and why anyone thinks they look good....

Rainbow icicles is the worst idea I've ever heard!

I honestly think that rainbow lights suck anyways...just do it all in one color! Or what would be cool would to be have those fiber optic lights and have your lights change color...SLOWLY!

I also think the icicles look best on eaves. And the rainbow ones just don't make any sense! I'm definitely not a big fan of blinkers, but what's worse is when someone has the icicles, and only one or two sections of them are blinking. What the heck is that?!?

We also have a house in the Bronx that goes nuts at Christmas. My mom saw it on HGTV's Extreme Christmas show the other day. They have all these creepy mannequins, some dancing, some in Disney scenes, some skating, and the nativity scene, with a Mary that looks like Joan Crawford (But the scary way Faye Dunanway played her in Mommy Dearest!)!

And I really hate the net lights! (Sorry juniorgrrl!!) I'm totally anal about getting my lights straight and neat, but the nets just look too symmetrical. And I don't think they have enough bulbs. And there's no challenge!! ;)

well its freezing up here and it snows all the time and people still use the icicle lights. :)

Well here, let's just say that all stores are sold out of the icicle lights. We can't real icicles, so we have to improvise. :D Personally, I think the regular, clear lights look the best. Ahhh, pretttttttty!!!!

I've noticed a lot of icicle lights around here -- there are more and more of them every year. They're okay, but I don't like how the icicle parts just sort of *dangle* there.

I don't like the net lights either...but I also don't like when people are all sloppy with winding lights around their trees. Or when they just do the bottom half of a tree and get tired and give up -- what is that about??? Eek. I think tastefully done clear lights are my favorite, but usually like anything monochromatic -- if you see a tree all done in blue or red, it looks really pretty.

This year, I've been seeing a LOT of those spirally Christmas tree light things.

My parents get our house professionally done, because of it's odd shape, and because they can't agree on what to use, how to do it, etc. I'm pretty sure the guy uses the net lights on our shrubbery...

I'm not to fond of blinking lights either, but *twinkling* lights however, are beautiful if they are done tastefully. If you cover a bush in them it looks really trippy...but if you just kind of throw the strand on the bush so it lands randomly everywhere, it looks soooo nice!

Icicle lights are a nice alternative, but they kind of annoy me because the lady across the street from me keeps them up AND LIT all year long. Apparently, they look cool from the inside because they're behind her curtains, but you can't see that from the street!!!
