LOL!!!

This was fun.

OK--unofficial Best Things in Texas poll.

Best beer joint: The Ginger Man in Rice Village (Houston)

Best place to get lost: Big Bend Park (not at the peak of summer, tho.....)

Best convenient place to see native wildlife: I-35 south of San Antonio (*live* armadillos, and hang out for the butterfly migration in October)

Best "whattheheckisthat" attraction: The giant statue of Sam Houston just north of Huntsville.

Anybody else?

Adrienne

The Road goes on Forever...
by Robert Earl Keen

Sherry was a waitress at the only joint in town.
She had a reputation as a girl who'd been around.
On Main street after midnight, a brand new pack of cig's,
a fresh one hanging from her lips, a beer between her legs.
She rides down to the river, and meets with all her friends.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Sonny was a loner, older than the rest.
He was goin' in the Navy, but couldn't pass the test.
So he hung around town, he sold a little pot.
The law caught wind of Sonny and one day he got caught.
But he was back in business when they set him free again.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Sonny's playin' eight-ball in the joint where Sherry works
when some drunken out-of-towner put his hand up Sherry's skirt.
Sonny took his pool cue, laid the drunk out on the floor.
Stuffed a dollar in her tip jar, walked out the door.
She's running right behind him, reaching for his hand.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

They jumped into his pickup, Sonny jammed it down in gear.
Sonny looked at Sherry, said "Let's get on out of here".
The stars were high above them, the moon was in the east.
The sun was setting on them when they reached Miami Beach.
They got a hotel by the water, a quart of Bombay Gin.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

They soon ran out of money but, Sonny knew a man,
who knew some Cuban refugees, who dealt in contraband.
Sonny met the Cubans in a house just off the route,
with a briefcase full of money and a pistol in his boot.
The card were on the table when the law came bustin' in.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

The Cubans grabbed the goodies, Sonny grabbed a jack,
broke the bathroom window and climbed on out the back.
Sherry drove the pickup through the alley on the side,
where a lawman tackled Sonny and was reading him his rights.
She stepped out in the alley with a single shot four-ten
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

They left the lawman lying, they made their getaway.
Got back to the motel just before the break of day.
Sonny gave her all the money, he blew a little kiss.
If they ask you how this happened say I forced you into this.
She watched him as his taillights disappeared around the bend.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Its main street after midnight, just like it was before,
twenty-one months later, at the local grocery store.
Sherry buys a paper and a cold six-pack of beer.
The headlines say that Sonny is going to the chair.
She pulls back onto mainstreet in her new Mercedes Benz.
The road goes on forever and the party never ends.

Exclamation Now, everyone stand....

I am all for the texas songs, but I feel that we should stop for a moment and pay due honor. I dont think the song is performed NEARLY enough.

Genlemen, remove your caps and place them over your chest, held in your right hand, facing the flag.

Ladies and gentlemen place your right hand over your left breast, facing the flag.

Non-residents will also stand, but not place their hands over their hearts, facing the flag.

"Texas, Our Texas"
William J. Marsh and Gladys Yoakum Wright:

Texas, Our Texas! all hail the mighty State!
Texas, Our Texas! so wonderful so great!
Boldest and grandest, withstanding ev'ry test
O Empire wide and glorious, you stand supremely blest.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

Texas, O Texas! your freeborn single star,
Sends out its radiance to nations near and far,
Emblem of Freedom! it set our hearts aglow,
With thoughts of San Jacinto and glorious Alamo.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

Texas, dear Texas! from tyrant grip now free,
Shines forth in splendor, your star of destiny!
Mother of heroes, we come your children true,
Proclaiming our allegiance, our faith, our love for you.

God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.
God bless you Texas! And keep you brave and strong,
That you may grow in power and worth, throughout the ages long.

I KNEW my fellow Texans would back me up!! Thanks everyone!

Here's one more. I hope this never comes true!

"Nightmare"
By: Pat Green

Last night I had me a nightmare
Dreamed that Texas was burning down, burning down
And all them people, I had grown up to love
Leaving town

So I cried "Oh Holy Moses, bring blood to the Red Red Sea
Bring back Townes Van Zandt, and my heroes back to me
Because I can play their songs, but it ain't they way they do
It ain't they way they do."

I had a nightmare, a nightmare, it was a nightmare.

Buddy Holly was riding on the wind
Stevie Ray, well he was too
When their star, come tumbling to the ground
Wasn't a thing that all the king's horses
And all the king's men could do

Me I've just got my ol' bar stool
And man it's burning me down, burning me down
Just like a brush fire, that burns on through the night
One of these days I'm just going
These days I'm going to burn on out

So I cried "Oh Holy Moses, bring blood to the Red Red Sea
Bring back Townes Van Zandt, and my heroes back to me
Because I can play their songs, but it ain't they way they do
It ain't they way they do."

I had a nightmare, a nightmare, it was a nightmare.

I had a nightmare, a nightmare, it was a nightmare.

First of all, Lifesaver, Props for Texas, Our Texas!! i LOVE singing it before A&M home football games. I almost posted it myself but went with "The Road.." for sentimental reasons. It was my SR class song in HS, and well, REK is an Aggie

and lifesaver, as a hill country boy myself, i agree with your "bests" except for one.

Best Beer Joint

The Dixie Chicken.

If you've never been, you gotta go at LEAST once

This native Houstonian desperately misses Texas. When I get really homesick, I go to this website.

Rudy's is soooo good! Ever heard of Joe Cotton's BBQ? It's a place over here in the outskirts of Corpus, closer to Robstown. Their BBQ is really, really good but has gone down in the recent years. Rudy's is a new fav! When I was in San Antonio last, I had to visit Rudy's. How could I not?
