Yes you are correct. I didn't say all Sorority women have a college degree. At one point in their life they have been educated at a college. I didn't say all finish.

Rather than attack this woman who was pictured in Playboy, why not compain to the magazine for its inappropriate stereotypes of Greek women?

Also, bear in mind that the woman pictured may not actually be a GLO member. It's not unheard of for magazines to use fake tattoos or other enhancements on models to create a desired look. If she is a DZ, then she is definitely disrespecting herself and her sorority, but also consider that she probably was not told what would be printed beside her photo either.

Regardless, I think the blame lies with the magazine for printing such garbage about women in GLOs.

I almost got a tattoo my freshman year the semester after I was initiated. Several of my other sisters got cute ones (like an Omega, which was our pledge class in the shape of two dolphins on her lower back), but I realized that I didn't have something that I wanted on my body for the rest of my life. I ended up being very happy that I didn't do it, because I had some problems with my sisters last year and contemplated leaving. That would have been fun to have that on there for the rest of my life and not even be a part of the organization.

Getting a tattoo is something that you have to seriously think about, whether or not it's your letters. If it is your letters, you have to make sure you are upholding the ideals of your organization at all times (which we do anyway, right?), because you can't just take it off like a t-shirt or a lavalier.

I know that if I ever get a tattoo, it won't have a A or F it, no matter how much I love my sorority.

This is based on this poastand the many others in this vein . . .

I am not surprised that some of you ladies don't want to do this kind of stuff yourselves, Tatttoos etc.

I am not surprised that you would recomend strongly against it if your advice was asked.

I am surprised that you speak so badly about the people that do these things and that you would go out of your way to punish them within the limited options you have at your disposal (expulsion or whatever).

There is a difference between social disaproval and administrative punishment.

I realize that you all seem to fall within a conservative and narrow viewpoint of what is socially acceptable.

However, as intellegent humans you have to also realize that using your viewpoint to restrict other people's behavior leaves you open to the same treatment?

We can always find more conservative groups of people that consider your behaviors to be morally reprehensible.

I think to be fair, any girl that lives in a state with active sodomy laws should be expelled for violating them. They are guilty of breaking a law based on morality. Would you want your letters associated with sodomy? And people talk, we know who does what, and it would be easy to find out in any case.

Reading the posts on here I am beginning to think less of sorority girls in general.

I find the reasoning to be inconsistent, flawed, or based on non-provable premises. And over all you are revealing yourselves a population that is: uptight, judgemental and vindictive.

Uptight in that you have narrow viewpoints of approved behavior.

Judgemental in that you feel free to condemn any action that violates the narrow viewpoints of your social world views.

Vindictive in that you will go out of your way to hurt the transgressor.

To give you the benefit of the doubt, you women must just believe you are intriniscally better human beings than I view myself to be, that you so easily stand in the capacity of judge, jury, and executioner over your Sisters.

I have two tattoos. Neither of which have anything to do with my sorority. I would never get anything sorority related made a permanent part of my body, because my feelings for the people in it tend to waver back and forth. However, I could care less what the other girls get tattooed on themselves. If they wanted to tattoo their letters on their forehead, I'd just tell them to make sure they took care of it, cuz it would look rather nasty if it got infected. (And you know those hair care products wouldn't be too great for it).

To each her (and his) own. Hell, if one of my sisters made it into Playboy, I'd probably buy a bunch of them and get her to autograph them.

Just a note about tatts

I have one, and it contains three things that i'm very proud of.

My State
My School
and My Fraternity.

60 years from now, if i'm cognizant, i WANT my grandchildren to see mine. It will show them that i'm not just another old man. I was once their age, and had the same thoughts, wishes, hopes, etc as they do. It will also show them that these things were important enough to me to put on my body, and will hopefully encourage them to have the same feelings for those things that i have.

And since i take the vows and pledges i make in our ritual seriously, i am in no fear of mis=representing my fraternity.

I would highly doubt that the girl in question's tattoo is real. more likely it is either a fake one, or an airbrush job.

BTW, did they say anthing in the spread about the 'cliche' butterfly tatt?

james to the rescue... i was drowning for a minute there... i agree that everyone is being rather judgemental... "no matter the letter, we're in it together"... there are no rules against having letters tattooed on in my sorority, in fact, a bunch of my sisters have yellow roses with letters on them somewhere...

crystalline- your letters represent your affiliation with the org, and the ideals and beliefs held by them. sometimes i don't get along with my sisters either, but we are still sisters.. "sisters first, then friends".. do you not wear your letters when you are mad a sister? just saying that even if you fight with your sisters it doesn't bring the meaning of those lovely letters tattooed on you down

Personally, I do not have a problem with tattoos per se....I think there are certainly some that are tacky depending on where they are and what they depict. Sorry but there is nothing trashier looking to me than a girl all dressed up in a pretty gown with her hair done and the makeup and everything, and then some band of roses around her upper arm or a butterfly peeking out of the back.

I think the intial sense of horror over the Playboy piece was that they had a little chart that showed the type of tattoo, and then listed what type of girl she was, how to get her in bed, and what she would be like after "the deed" or something to that extent. The description of the girl with the DZ tattoo was something like "Social-climbing sorority bitch." CONSIDERING the type of woman that Playboy portrays as ideal, I (and many sorority women) find it rude and perverse of Playboy to stereotype all sorority women as bitches.

My guess is that the tattoo was fake. It did not look real to me, and the fact that they listed it as "Greek letters on her ass" led me to believe that they have no idea what the hell they are talking about. I know of NO Greek woman (or man for that matter) who had their letters tattooed ON THEIR ASS. I don't think it is at all disrespectful of your organization to get a tattoo, in fact I believe it is a sign of devotion.....to put the letters on your ass, yes that is disrespectful. But the fact is that most organizations frown upon it because if you get your badge pulled they don't want you wearing the letters anymore.

I have a tattoo bearing my letters and one of our symbols. I, too, sometimes have different feelings for my sisters. However, I am proud to be a Phi Mu, and I will always be a Phi Mu, and I don't regret getting it.

That tat is on the small of my back. The other one I have is on my upper left shoulder, and I wish I would've gotten it somewhere else. My dad hates tattoos, and doesn't know that I have them. I absolutely love it, but I wish it was somewhere else.

I agree that many people here are being a bit harsh. Everyone has different values and different opinions, thus they will make different decisions. Just because someone's choices are different from yours, they aren't necessarily wrong.
