I can see everyone's point on this. This Tau guy is totally off his rocker....maybe he shouldn't be banned, but some of his posts could be deleted and he could be warned. Then if he acts up again, he could be booted. However, it does seem as though that is all he is after. Almost everyone of us has at one point or another said something to offend someone else. But for every offensive post we had, we had about 20 positive ones. I've looked for positive ones that Tau-whatever has posted, and, alas, could find none. To be honest, I just think he has a LOT of time on his hands.
I think that we all are protective of our GLOs. I agree with both PM-Mama and Chantillylace55. I would be all over someone who disrespected Delta Zeta, whether it be in a chat room or out in public. But, I would also consider the source. At least this Tau guy is an equal opportunity insulter!

THE IDEA of A MODERATOR:
To Moderate his/her thread or threads for people who in their own style want to degrade either people or Organizations on this Site!
Using foul Language, spaming, or other usage of said before is not actcceptable!
If some one is talking in general in a jovial tone as HO, that may mean whore, street walker, etc. To me it would me stop, ergo HO you sucker! Stop Dammit!
There are many persons out in cyber land who want to down grade anything!
We as Greeks have one of the best things I in my few years enjoy and while some of it is funny, some is very serious!
Where else can you come and try to find answers to important questions!?
Where else have you met so many Greeks who have situations that need to be answered and get help?
We have some of the Greatest People in the World on this Site, let us not get it spoiled!
The Psalm from HAL!
"It is not a right to be on this thread but a privilage!"
So Quoted by me!!!! In case there is a doubt!

You're welcome! But, they deleted my favorite thread in Greek Life (the one Tau started)! Well, it was getting pretty ridiculous...lol. But it was DAMN funny! I love how all of us banned together made it so random that he stopped posting
Wait, can I use the word DAMN? Or is that foul language?
DAMN! I love all of you GCers!

Here's where the line is drawn in my mind. When someone personally attacks a person or organization, he/she has gone too far. When someone does something that is illegal, he/she has gone too far. When someone is blatantly and purposly (did I just invent a new word? Is it purposfully?) disrespectful to a person or group, he/she is skating on very thin ice.
There's a big difference between laughing with someone or at someone.
In terms of banning someone, I'm glad I don't have to make that decision.

Ok....see this is where my issue is. And I am kinda glad that this topic is being brought back to the surface, so to speak.
Tau(insert #'s) WAS annoying and he/she WAS stirring up trouble... hey, he/she even got me a little riled up. To me, banning in this case was a pretty good idea, because they had absolutely nothing of merit to lend to the convos. It really doesn't matter how you look at it, Tau's posts were worthless (except to draw attention, an area in which he/she was quite successful).
HOWEVER...to revisit a related topic...
I think that DeltAlums quote above illustrates the double-edged nature of the monitoring of posts on GC. I felt that the mocking of another org's motto in the Greek Life forum was "blatantly and purposly...disrespectful to a person or group." I think the same applies to the guys that were directing very personal attacks toward certain posters on that same forum. But he defended their posts.
Now mind you, I acknowledge that you, DeltAlum, are not a moderator. But certainly your opinion is shared by those that ARE mods. Or do you guys disagree, and just don't vocalize it?
It just serves to illustrate that it matters who you offend.

It was funny...I wish posts would just get locked rather than deleted, that way we could at least still read and laugh

Being banned rather than blocked doesn't really serve that much purpose. It's so easy to get another UN, LOL. Some sites if you get kicked off, you get blocked from the site, LOL. The only purpose banning serves that I can think of, is that you can't go back and delete the posts yourself if you regret what you posted.

And, I especially don't see the purpose of the title "banned" under your name, for thousands of people to see that you got kicked off.
|
Why not? If you were disrespectful enough to get banned in the 1st place, then I say you deserve your name to show you were banned...like a public mockery.

We disagreed on so much before, but for once I totally agree with you! It does matter who you offend. If I offended a newbie, then I'd get a slap on the wrist. However, if a newbie were to offend someone else, such as Tau had, then there would be a banning.
However, the point of my thread was to question the future of Tau... and I applaud John for banning him. Good job.

MODs are all asswholes waiting to pounce on unsuspecting new members whom want to post on the site!
If you da say damn, hell, etal things we we delete you if you are not up to our standards of civility!
If you then beleive that then you are WRONG!
I have had to explain to some people that no we do not kick you off for a few things but from a concenious of the Mods!
Heck if that wqas the case, I would have been booted!
I can be your best or worst fill in the gap----!
It is when someone gets so bad and when so many of you complain about a single person then it it is done!
Yes we as Mods have our thread so we can discuss some one who is offending a few or a lot of people!
Do we get upset, yes we do!
When we who are just like you take the Mantel of Moderaqtor on, it is a big responsibility and we taqke it to heart to try to run a great Greek Site!
Have you found one better? NO!
We are not infallabile but we have many to back us up and tell us if we mess up!
John Hammel is not real, he is a computor that I have NO CONTROLL OVER! He is tacking the world over

There are people here I disagree with and who disagree with me, but I don't think that we want to have each other banned just for that.
But if someone comes in just to piss people off, and manages to destroy threads by getting them really off track (when "how does sorority rush works" becomes "u all is ugly except my sorority"), I think they ought to be banned. Yes, we have the option not to read his/her posts, or even not to take them seriously. But the more garbage posts this site gets clogged up with, the less likely I am, at least, to read them. It's like a listserv where people always post spam. Eventually, legitimate people take their conversations elsewhere. You have to make some effort to make your neighborhood nice, or people move out.
